The Journey Home Book

At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Swami Radhanath reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath's saga  "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

RadhanathMaharaj.net gives us a complete collection of the teaching of Radhanath Swami. Teachings consists of Transcriptions of lectures delivered by Radhanath Swami at various places. This website is to inspire the followers of Radhanath Swami to practice the philosophy of Vaishanavism.

Associate with Devotees Striving for Devotional Service By Radhanath Maharaj

na yasya cittaḿ bahir-artha-vibhramaḿ
tamo-guhāyāḿ ca viśuddham āviśat
yad-bhakti-yogānugṛhītam añjasā
munir vicaṣṭe nanu tatra te gatim

The devotee whose heart has been completely cleansed by the process of devotional service and who is favored by Bhaktidevī does not become bewildered by the external energy, which is just like a dark well. Being completely cleansed of all material contamination in this way, a devotee is able to understand very happily Your name, fame, form, activities, etc.

PURPORT by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad

As stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (3.25.25):

satāḿ prasańgān mama vīrya-saḿvido

bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ

taj-joṣaṇād āśv apavarga-vartmani

śraddhā ratir bhaktir anukramiṣyati

Simply by the association of pure devotees one can understand the transcendental name, fame, quality and activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has repeatedly said:

'sādhu-sańga', 'sādhu-sańga' — sarva-śāstre kaya

lava-mātra sādhu-sańge sarva-siddhi haya

Simply by associating with a pure devotee, one becomes wonderfully advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Sādhu-sańga, or association with a devotee, means always engaging in Kṛṣṇa consciousness by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa maha mantra and by acting for Kṛṣṇa. Specifically, chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra purifies one, and this chanting is therefore recommended by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

H.H Radhanath Swami On-Lord Caitanya Descends With The Garland of Nam Sankirtan And Krishna Prem

Translation

Thus with two intentions Lord appeared with his devotees and tasted the nectar of Prema, with the congregational chanting of the Holy name.. Thus he spread he kirtan, even among the untouchables. He wrote a leaf of the Holy name and Prema. With which he garlanded the entire material world.

(1.21) he bhakta kori……

In this way, assuming a sentiment of a devotee, he preached devotional service, while practicing it himself.

Purport by his Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

We Rupa Goswami met Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Prayag, he offered his respectful obeisance by submitting to Lord Caitanya was more magnanimous than any other incarnation of Krsna. Because He was distributing love of God, love of Krsna. His mission was to enhance love of Godhead, in the human form of life the highest achievement is to attain the platform of love of Godhead. Lord Caitanya did not invent a system of religion as people sometimes assume. Religious systems are meant to show the existence of God, who then was generally approached as the cosmic order supplier, but Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s transcendental mission is to distribute love of Godhead to everyone, anyone who accepts God as the Supreme, can take to the process of chanting Hare Krsna and become a lover of God.

H.H. Radhanath Swami On-Controlling Mind by Attentively Chanting Holy Name SB-05.06.03

We are reading from SB Canto 5 chap 6. Activities of Lord Rishab Dev Text 3. Parikshit Maharaj begins this chapter by enquiring from Srila Sukadev Goswami, why it was that Rishabdev who was an incarnation of supreme personality of godhead who naturally had mystic powers. Why did he neglect them. He acted like an ordinary person who appeared socially to be mad. People abused him, insulted him, harassed him in so many ways. Simply by his glance he could have destroyed them but he tolerated it. And when there was a fire in the forest, he could have easily by his mystic powers extinguished it. But instead he willingly burnt in that fire. Why? So Sukadev Goswami describes how the nature of the mind is. It can be distracted from the spiritual path and the very cause of our downfall even if we attach ourselves with the mystic potencies. Because when the lord appears within in this world he appears especially in this instance to give an example to humanity what we should strive for, what we should see as sacred within our lives

Dying to Live - Prerna Mumbai By Radhanath Swami

I sincerely thank everyone for assembling this evening in Sri Rädhägopénäth, Temple for the festival of inspiration. Tonight’s topic can be discussed from various perspectives. I would like to share some thoughts with you this evening on a particular perspective of this subject which I believe is very essential for those who want to make progress on the spiritual path. The topic I have been asked to speak on is entitled “Dying to Live.” In Bhagavad-gétä, Kåñëa tells that what is the time of awakening for a common person is the time of sleep for a realized soul, and the awakening for the self-realized soul is the time of sleep for ordinary people or it is said that for one who is very much imprisoned by the materialistic conception of life, they live to die, and for one who is seeking truth, such a person dies to live.

What is Real Attonement By His Holyness Raddhanath Swami

I offer my very sincere gratitude to the management of an NSCI for facilitating this very wonderful place for this evening’s satsang. My very sincere thanks to all of you who have so kindly come, taken your precious time for pursuing the most valuable cause of life.

Krishna is the cause of all causes; Sarva Karana Karanam. Thus, there is no greater cause than trying to understand him, love him, and serve him. In the 6th canto of Srimad Bhagavatham, Maharaj Parikshit asks a very important question to Sukadev Goswami. Just previously in the 5th canto, Sukadeva Goswami explained the various ways that the spirit soul within the clutches of material existence can both enjoy and suffer. Just as there are different environmental conditions within this world, on a much greater scale, this is taken place within the universe. In the north and south poles, very very cold. In Bombay, in April-May, very very hot. In a similar way, the acaryas explain there are heavenly planets where those who amass the credits of great piety can enjoy far superior that even what pious people can enjoy in this world and there are also places there is big suffer, hellish conditions.

H.H. Radhanath Swami On-Do Your Activities Only for Krishna's Pleasure SB-05.04.17

Lord Rsabhadeva performed all kinds of sacrifices one hundred times according to the instructions of the Vedic literatures. Thus He satisfied Lord Visnu in every respect. All the rituals were enriched by first-class ingredients. They were executed in holy places according to the proper time by priests who were all young and faithful. In this way Lord Visnu was worshiped, and the prasada was offered to all the demigods. Thus the functions and festivals were all successful.

Radhanath Swami On-Krishna Accepts the Devotion

On behalf of His Devine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada the founder Acarya of our society in all of our temples we welcome you. This evening we are celebrating Pushya Abhishek. I will not speak long because you have all come to see the beautiful flower shower ceremony of Sri Radha Gopinathji. I would like to speak something of the history of this festival. Pushya Ahbishek actually means the winter bathing ceremony of Sri Radha and Krsna in the month of Paush, In the Krsna book or Srimad Bhagvatam generally, whenever Krsna kills demons the cowherd boys dance and clap their hands and cry out “well done well done “ and the demigods shower Krsna with flowers. So this bathing Krsna with the shower of flowers is authorized by Sukhadev Goswami in Srimad Bhagvatam. It was very much during Rasa Lila they were being showered by flowers, during killing of demons they were showered by flowers. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in this world not to kill the demons with His weapons of chakra or bow and arrow. Nityanand Prabhu when Mahaprabhu was about to sever the heads of Jagai and Madhai he said “My Lord in this age of Kali everyone is more or less like this Jagai and Madhai.

The Essence of the Meaning of Bhagavad Gita By Radhanath Maharaj

I am very grateful to be here this evening. A special gratitude to Anil, Kiran, Agvinesh, Priya for opening the doors of their home for us together. When we first came in this evening, Anil prabhu to three different people was very enthusiastically speaking the story of King Ashok. So since you already started the class, I will give some commentary to what you spoke with your permission. Anil was explaining how Ashok was a very powerful king, who was very aggressive in his conquering but then he came in contact with the teachings of the Lord Buddha who the Vedic scriptures had prophesised two thousand five hundred years before his appearance as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and when that transformation of heart took place his whole life changed. Because kings are generally very aggressive, often times egoistic but Buddha was teaching humility, ahimsa, non-violence and what Anil was saying, was with the same enthusiasm, with the same aggressiveness that he was conquering and ruling kingdoms, he was sharing the gift of Lord Buddha with the people. Yes? And Anil was so enthusiastic that he keeps talking and talking about the subject. But actually throughout history this has been one of the ways great spiritual teachings have been spread to the common people.

SB-03.24.43 Los Angeles His Holyness Radhanath Swami

He fixed his mind upon The Supreme Personality of Godhead Param Brahman, who is beyond cause and affect, who manifested three modes of material nature, he is who is beyond those three modes and who is perceived only through unfailing devotional service.

Purport by his divine grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Whenever there is bhakti there must be three things present, the devotee, the devotion and the Lord. Without these three

1.Bhakta
2.Bhakti
3.Bhagavan

There is no meaning to the word Bhakti.

Kardama Muni fixed his mind on the supreme brahman and realized him through bhakti or devotional service. This indicates that he fixed his mind on the personal feature of the Lord because bhakti cannot be executed unless one has realization of the personal feature of the absolute truth. “Gunebhyas ca” he who is beyond the three modes of material nature but it is due to him that the three modes of material nature are manifested. In other words although the material energy is an emanation of the supreme Lord he is not affected as we are by the modes of material nature. We are conditioned souls but he is not affected. Although the material nature has emanated from him he is the supreme living entity and is never affected by maya but we are subordinate minute living entities prone to be affected by the limitations of maya. If he is in constant contact with the supreme Lord by devotional service, the conditioned living entity also becomes freed from the infection of maya. This is confirmed in Bhagawad Gita “Sagunan samatityaitan” BG.14.26 “A person engaged in Krishna consciousness is at once liberated from the influence of the three modes of material nature. In other words once the conditioned soul engages him in devotional service he also becomes liberated like the Lord”.
