The Journey Home Book
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Swami Radhanath reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

The devotee whose heart has been completely cleansed by the process of devotional service and who is favored by Bhaktidevī does not become bewildered by the external energy, which is just like a dark well. Being completely cleansed of all material contamination in this way, a devotee is able to understand very happily Your name, fame, form, activities, etc.

As stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (3.25.25):
satāḿ prasańgān mama vīrya-saḿvido
bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ
taj-joṣaṇād āśv apavarga-vartmani
śraddhā ratir bhaktir anukramiṣyati
Simply by the association of pure devotees one can understand the transcendental name, fame, quality and activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has repeatedly said:
'sādhu-sańga', 'sādhu-sańga' — sarva-śāstre kaya
lava-mātra sādhu-sańge sarva-siddhi haya
Simply by associating with a pure devotee, one becomes wonderfully advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Sādhu-sańga, or association with a devotee, means always engaging in Kṛṣṇa consciousness by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa maha mantra and by acting for Kṛṣṇa. Specifically, chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra purifies one, and this chanting is therefore recommended by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

(1.21) he bhakta kori……
In this way, assuming a sentiment of a devotee, he preached devotional service, while practicing it himself.

We Rupa Goswami met Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Prayag, he offered his respectful obeisance by submitting to Lord Caitanya was more magnanimous than any other incarnation of Krsna. Because He was distributing love of God, love of Krsna. His mission was to enhance love of Godhead, in the human form of life the highest achievement is to attain the platform of love of Godhead. Lord Caitanya did not invent a system of religion as people sometimes assume. Religious systems are meant to show the existence of God, who then was generally approached as the cosmic order supplier, but Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s transcendental mission is to distribute love of Godhead to everyone, anyone who accepts God as the Supreme, can take to the process of chanting Hare Krsna and become a lover of God.

Krishna is the cause of all causes; Sarva Karana Karanam. Thus, there is no greater cause than trying to understand him, love him, and serve him. In the 6th canto of Srimad Bhagavatham, Maharaj Parikshit asks a very important question to Sukadev Goswami. Just previously in the 5th canto, Sukadeva Goswami explained the various ways that the spirit soul within the clutches of material existence can both enjoy and suffer. Just as there are different environmental conditions within this world, on a much greater scale, this is taken place within the universe. In the north and south poles, very very cold. In Bombay, in April-May, very very hot. In a similar way, the acaryas explain there are heavenly planets where those who amass the credits of great piety can enjoy far superior that even what pious people can enjoy in this world and there are also places there is big suffer, hellish conditions.
I am very grateful to be here this evening. A special gratitude to Anil, Kiran, Agvinesh, Priya for opening the doors of their home for us together. When we first came in this evening, Anil prabhu to three different people was very enthusiastically speaking the story of King Ashok. So since you already started the class, I will give some commentary to what you spoke with your permission. Anil was explaining how Ashok was a very powerful king, who was very aggressive in his conquering but then he came in contact with the teachings of the Lord Buddha who the Vedic scriptures had prophesised two thousand five hundred years before his appearance as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and when that transformation of heart took place his whole life changed. Because kings are generally very aggressive, often times egoistic but Buddha was teaching humility, ahimsa, non-violence and what Anil was saying, was with the same enthusiasm, with the same aggressiveness that he was conquering and ruling kingdoms, he was sharing the gift of Lord Buddha with the people. Yes? And Anil was so enthusiastic that he keeps talking and talking about the subject. But actually throughout history this has been one of the ways great spiritual teachings have been spread to the common people.

Whenever there is bhakti there must be three things present, the devotee, the devotion and the Lord. Without these three
1.Bhakta
2.Bhakti
3.Bhagavan
There is no meaning to the word Bhakti.
Kardama Muni fixed his mind on the supreme brahman and realized him through bhakti or devotional service. This indicates that he fixed his mind on the personal feature of the Lord because bhakti cannot be executed unless one has realization of the personal feature of the absolute truth. “Gunebhyas ca” he who is beyond the three modes of material nature but it is due to him that the three modes of material nature are manifested. In other words although the material energy is an emanation of the supreme Lord he is not affected as we are by the modes of material nature. We are conditioned souls but he is not affected. Although the material nature has emanated from him he is the supreme living entity and is never affected by maya but we are subordinate minute living entities prone to be affected by the limitations of maya. If he is in constant contact with the supreme Lord by devotional service, the conditioned living entity also becomes freed from the infection of maya. This is confirmed in Bhagawad Gita “Sagunan samatityaitan” BG.14.26 “A person engaged in Krishna consciousness is at once liberated from the influence of the three modes of material nature. In other words once the conditioned soul engages him in devotional service he also becomes liberated like the Lord”.
