The Journey Home Book
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Swami Radhanath reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.
RadhanathMaharaj.net gives us a complete collection of the teaching of Radhanath Swami. Teachings consists of Transcriptions of lectures delivered by Radhanath Swami at various places. This website is to inspire the followers of Radhanath Swami to practice the philosophy of Vaishanavism.

TRANSLATION
The place, the time, the cause, the purpose, the activity and the ambition were all the same for both the demigods and the demons, but the demigods achieved one result and the demons another. Because the demigods are always under the shelter of the dust of the Lord's lotus feet, they could very easily drink the nectar and get its result. The demons, however, not having sought shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord, were unable to achieve the result they desired.
PURPORT
In Bhagavad-gétä (4.11) it is said, ye yathä mäà prapadyante täàs tathaiva bhajämy aham: the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme judge who rewards or punishes different persons according to their surrender unto His lotus feet. Therefore it can actually be seen that although karmés and bhaktas may work in the same place, at the same time, with the same energy and with the same ambition, they achieve different results. The karmés transmigrate through different bodies in the cycle of birth and death, sometimes going upward and sometimes downward, thus suffering the results of their actions in the karma-cakra, the cycle of birth and death. The devotees, however, because of fully surrendering at the lotus feet of the Lord, are never baffled in their attempts. Although externally they work almost like the karmés, the devotees go back home, back to Godhead, and achieve success in every effort. The demons or atheists have faith in their own endeavors, but although they work very hard day and night, they cannot get any more than their destiny. The devotees, however, can surpass the reactions of karma and achieve wonderful results, even without effort. It is also said, phalena paricéyate: one's success or defeat in any activity is understood by its result. There are many karmés in the dress of devotees, but the Supreme Personality of Godhead can detect their purpose. The karmés want to use the property of the Lord for their selfish sense gratification, but a devotee endeavors to use the Lord's property for God's service. Therefore a devotee is always distinct from the karmés, although the karmés may dress like devotees. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gétä (3.9), yajïärthät karmaëo 'nyatra loko 'yaà karma-bandhanaù. One who works for Lord Viñëu is free from this material world, and after giving up his body he goes back home, back to Godhead. A karmé, however, although externally working like a devotee, is entangled in his nondevotional activity, and thus he suffers the tribulations of material existence. Thus from the results achieved by the karmés and devotees, one can understand the presence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who acts differently for the karmés and jïänés than for the devotees. The author of Çré Caitanya-caritämåta therefore says:
kåñëa-bhakta—niñkäma, ataeva 'çänta'
bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kämé—sakali 'açänta'
[Cc. Madhya 19.149]
The karmés who desire sense gratification, the jïänés who aspire for the liberation of merging into the existence of the Supreme, and the yogés who seek material success in mystic power are all restless, and ultimately they are baffled. But the devotee, who does not expect any personal benefit and whose only ambition is to spread the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is blessed with all the auspicious results of bhakti-yoga, without hard labor.
Lecture begins
This chapter is the culmination, or let’s say, the conclusion of a long historical epic. This story like so many other stories as Srimad Bhagavatam reveals essential truths for anyone who wants to make spiritual progress for many levels and many prospects, this play with so many instructions critical to our progress of Bhakti. We lifetimes and for many
We find here in the very foundational essences of Psychology of human nature and especially the very essence of spiritual life everyone is searching for happiness. My special dandavaths to Krishna Kshetra Pr, very senior and worshipable beloved God Brother. He is so patiently sitting and listening to my broken words.
Ananda mayo abyasath – everyone is looking for pleasure. We are calling to one particular state of consciousness and status according to once freewill is mixed for pleasure in different ways. The pleasure we are seeking is to release the max energy of the Atma or the soul. Prema puu mahan – the goal of life is to realize the love of God sitting with in us. Such love is unmotivated and uninterrupted. Due to freewill of the jiva strives to find the pleasure in forgettable of our relationship with the all attractive SPOG who loved even with in us.
The nature of material mind is so complex again forgetful ness of our relationship with Kr, it can create an endless justification in unlimited message for trying to exploit the material nature. With the goal of life simply selfish. Aham mameti – this is the trap of all miseries. We are bind by this misconception of I and mine.
But in the fifth chapter of Gita, Krsna gives us a peace formula. Bhoktaram yajna tapas am sarva loka mahesvaram We are all looking for peace, for real happiness, it is only possible when we accept intellectually and within our hearts practically that Krsna is the Supreme proprietor of everything.
Therefore to please Him is the perfection of life, samsiddhir Hari toshan. Samsiddhir - the full complete perfection of everything - Hari toshnam, is just to make Krsna happy.
And this is possible when we, suhrdam sarva bhutanam, when we actually have faith that Krsna is really our well wishing friend. He is Hari. He comes to take away our inauspiciousness to give us Himself.
Whatever Krsna does for everyone is out of love. Krsna or let us say Lord Narasimhadeva loved Hiranyakashipu millions and billions and trillions of times that you could ever love your husband or wife or your own little baby children who are just looking at you with innocent helpless eyes. Did you ever think of it that way?
He is giving Hiranyakashipu what Hiranyakashipu needs out of His divine love. Krsna is not partial to anyone in the sense that He is equal to everyone but He naturally reciprocates according to how we approach Him. This is what Prabhupada is explaining in the purport, ye yathä mäà prapadyante täàs tathaiva bhajämy aham , as we approach the Supreme Lord, as we surrender. And everyone is surrendering one way or another, Krsna responds according to His love. His anger is love. Lord Narasimhadeva looked very angry but Prahlad Maharaj recognized that that anger was just a very extraordinary expression of His sweet love. When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was in Simhachalam, beautiful mountain near the sea near Vishakapatanam in South India, He stood before the murti, the deity of Lord Narasimhadeva and He was offering a beautiful prayer that the lion looks very ferocious but actually to her cubs she is most gentle and kind. Material nature sometimes seems very ferocious but for a devotee who has faith and love in Krsna, Krsna from within the heart reveals Himself. The famous story when the Japanese were bombing Calcutta in World War 2. People were running to the ____ shelters and Prabhupada was very calm, think he was cooking puris chanting Hare Krsna and he told us that he saw that Krsna is coming in the form of these bombs. Prabhupada was lovingly welcoming whether his body was blown into a thousand of pieces or whether he was protected. He had complete faith in the love of God - Maro bhi raho bhi, Bhaktivinoda Thakur prays like this, "My Lord you can protect me or you can kill me, that's for you to decide, I am your servant unconditionally". In this story, these and many other lessons are described very graphically in a very enchanting and exciting way. This is the glory of the Puranas and especially of the Mahapurana.
These basic philosophical truths are explained in such fantastic ways to captivate our attention. Because truth is only as beneficial as we digest it. Just like food. Even if food has very good nutrients, if you can’t digest it, you get no benefits from those nutrients. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine distention is very very fundamental. You can give the best medicine but if your body cannot assimilate it, it is useless. So assimilation is very important. Krishna says in Gita: bhaktosi me sakha ceti rahasyam hetad uttamam. The bhagavad gita,…. the knowledge is there for everybody. But unless we have humility and devotion tad viddhi pranipaten pariprashnen sewaya unless we have humility and devotion and eagerness to serve, we can not digest the knowledge. It could remain in possibly in our intelligence and our memory but to touch the heart, that’s what makes it affect our life and awakens the soul. So Srila Vyasadeva, he wrote the puranas and empowered his son, sukadev goswami specially to present these basic fundamental spiritual truths and the whole elaborate philosophy around them in such mystical fantastic stories. And we may say how is this true? It must be mythology. But that type of thinking is mythology. Everything we see around us is miraculous. We take miraculous things for granted because we see them all the time. Every tree, every plant and every human being and there are a lot of them in Bombay. It’s a miracle. If you really study, If you really study with the heart and with the intellect, a single rat or cockroach, you will be mystified by the miracle of how they work. You will have to see God behind it all. And there is a lot of them. But we we see them and we are not mystified. In fact we are reposed. Because we are not seeing the beautiful creative energy of God but We are just seeing according to what we like and what we don’t like according to our conditionings. But its really relative conditionings, because rats and cockroaches love each other. Just because you have a different body and different mind you think in a different way but who is right? This is what sectarian comes through. The rat will never agree that humans are more beautiful than another rat and a human will never agree that a rat is more beautiful than my lover. Because we have relative perception. This is how nationalism and racism and secterainism among the religions.
This is what I am identifying with, this is what I am conditioned to connect to, so it must be must be true, but the fact is material creation is a great wonder, if we really see how God is working through nature, with an open and receptive mind, then it is not even a surprise to read about the demons and demigods churning the ocean of milk, that is how it begins. Difficulties on the path of devotion always bring about glorious revelations, and priceless gifts, if we simply have the patience, the perseverance, and the faith to carry on. In this story the devatas are not just coming to the God and instantly everything getting fulfilled, they are going through severe and inconceivable labor and efforts before they actually get what they want, even if they get what they want it is not that easy. So Bali maharaj the emperor of the asuras, very powerful, he conquered the devatas, and the devatas are helpless, they are practically homeless, they have nothing to do, all their power, all their duties, all their property is snatched away by a superior force, this is the life in heavenly planets some time, this is very philosophical principle, instructive, we are very insignificant on this little tiny earth, for a life span of so small, and things are so uncertain, padam padam yad vipadam natesam, Krishna said in Gita this entire material existence , ‘ a brahma bhuvana loka ’ From highest planet to lowest planet all going to be suffer, only thing that is certain is everything in the material world is uncertain, Krishna is the manufacturer, he has certified this truth, we are trying to find happiness, through our material arrangements, in this temporary world, Even devatas can not do it, what is our position, Srimad-Bhagavatam is trying to break our faith in illusion. Unless we break our faith in illusion, we can not establish the real faith in truth, It is very important Sri Isopanishad explains you have to understand the ignorance and knowledge simultaneously, so many stories are there for a conditioned soul our faith in illusion has to be crushed, before we can get faith in truth, we have to cultivate simultaneously, the devatas they are great devotees, we should honor and respect them, everyone of them, because we make mistakes too. They make mistakes, but when they really are much more sensational, your mistakes are not kept in Srimad-Bhagavatam, because no body really cares for them, but when the demigods make mistakes whole universe is gets effected, here we find they make some mistakes, they make some aparadhs, however great vaishnav you are, when you make aparadh to great souls, Krishna is going to withdraw his mercy, to teach you a lesson, which is another type of mercy, they lost everything, our tendency when things are going right we think I am the doer, when things are going wrong, ‘we are not the doer, we are done’, they didn’t know what to do, they fell, at that point they turned to Krishna, ‘janmaisvarya suta sribir’, Kuntidevi says it is very difficult to call out God’s name feelingly when you have high beauty, high knowledge, high fame, and high education, wealth, great wealth, because we become complacent and proud, we think we are the doer, that is the beautiful verse that Prabhupada often quotes, when Krishna wants to show special flavor he may takes everything away, that is what He did here, the demigods they were not, they were really crying for God’s mercy, when Krishna came he wanted to tech them and he wanted to teach entire all living beings, fantastic way here you find the perfection of politics, diplomacy, psychology, history everything is there, the demigods they are stronger than you, make truce with them and how to make truce, on the basis of higher principle, this is very important, we can focus on this for a long time, but we are not going to do it. But just think, you may be having problems with your god brothers, god sisters, or god brothers or god sisters of some other guru, or you may be having difficulty with your brothers or sisters, your husband or your wife. Krishna consciousness means to unite on a higher principle than our present quarrels and disagreements, or even a higher principles on relative things that we agree on. Sometimes, in marriages, for the higher principle of the children or for the higher principle of the vows we have taken before God, we have to work things out, no matter what. This is duty, this is civilization. For brahmacari, even though there may be disturbance, agitation, there may be conflict in the ashram… anything could cause disturbance, but the reality is we can adjust everything if we can focus on a higher principle. What is the higher principle? To please Krishna, to please Guru, to please vaisnavas. Everything can be worked out if you are dutiful to the higher principle. And everything could be adjusted in an auspicious way. And Krishna wants to teach us this, because of something that we want to be faithful to anything in this world. So, Krishna wants to teach us in the most graphic way – between the demons and the demigods.
Now these are not just little guys, these are the most egoistic conquerors of the universe. The higher principle - the devatas and the asuas disagree on almost everything, yes…! They disagree philosophically, socially, every way. But there is one thing that they agree on - they are looking for pleasure. They have very different ideas of pleasure. For the demigods, the standard is that the pleasure is in sattva guna – the mode of goodness. For the asuras, it is the rajo guna – passion and ignorance. Different kinds, but they both are looking for pleasure.
So, Visnu is so expert. Nectar is the facility that empowers you to enjoy whatever kind of pleasure you want millions of times greater than you do now. Everyone wants to be healthy, and live a long life so that they can enjoy these pleasures without interference – so, the nectar will give you that. So, it is such a unifying principle. A higher principle.
Visnu got the demigods and the demons to work together, can you imagine that? To work together harmoniously on the same project! On the basis of a higher principle. So, if they can do, why can we? The higher principle was amrita – nectar. There are millions and trillions of disagreements, but they could agree on this one point. Why cant we? Krishna consciousness is based on the higher principle – amrita – nectar/ as Vaisnavas, we all agree – that the goal of life is to please Krishna. We all want that awakning of divine love. Although due to our conditionings, our upbringing, our experiences in life, we have so many differences. But somehow or other, who ever we are, in whatever relationships we have in Krishna consciousness, we adjust everything for the higher principle.
There are many differences. Somehow rather who ever we are our every relation ship with Krishna we adjust everything for the higher principle. And we are duty bound to the higher principle. And are ready to make happy each other on the basis of this higher principle. This is KC. So whoever they are the same principle. The people who murdering each other and associating each other killing each other severely, the fundamental philosophy is an ideology that totally opposed to each other.
Krishna got them together on the same project harmoniously on the basis of this higher principle. By focusing on the higher principle we can always adjust whatever disturbances are there and make progress together. But if we forget the higher principle there is nothing to else to serve the egoistic principles. There is no possibility , SP explains that there is a legal nations that formed the UN after world war 2, but there was never been a time there is no war. Because they are forgetting the basic principles that can unify us. Our connection with the absolute truth, to Krishna to the God. So here within demigods and demons, now they instead of taking as one team they both have very different motivations but they are working together for the nector. So many lessons Krishna teaches us even for getting the Nector. They did not get just the nector because the ocean is very vast, and they take the mountain to churn, is sinking and crushing them and breaking their bones and they realized completely helpless and they turned to Krishna. Krishna comes and lifts the whole of the mountain. And when they start churning with Vasuki starts fighting that who gets the head and who gets the tail. When ultimately the demons say we will not churn until we get the Head, we don’t want do at the tails. The tail is the rear end of the snake. We want the Head, the frot of the snake. Nice, we are in a prestigious position. But like ant prestigious position in the material world its like the head of a snake. Looks nice, gives you some pleasure for sometime but then fire stats coming out. That Vasuki is getting very hot and massive flames poring out of her mouth is scorching the demand but the demigods were back are happy. There is good lesson is here too. Trinadapi sunichena tarorapi sahisnuna – a simple position in life goes throws out off all difficulties, if you are in a high position, if you akinchana gocharam – if you don’t claim that this is mine, if you are not looking for the prestige and power of that position but just looking for the service of that position, even if there are flames you don’t get burnt. But if we want the credit, we want the prestige, when the flames come and the flames do come, it burns and it is an excruciating experience to be burnt. Krsna says in Gita that for one who has been honored, dishonor is worse than death. What that really means is one who is attached to that honor. If you are honored but you accept that the honor really belongs to my guru and Krsna, then dishonor doesn't destroy you. In fact its just like an another wave passing on the current of material existence, you go on with your service, matra sparshas.., we tolerate all these dualities because they come and they go but as soon as we attach ourselves to either of these dualities, very difficult. So much impediment and suffering. So then Krsna had to send rain to cool off Vasuki. They continued on, so many difficulties, so many troubles, they were churning for a long time and nothing happened. But they didn’t give up, they kept going and then finally, this is one of the most amazing parts of this story. They were risking their lives, there are struggling, they are working together the two most inimical parts of God's family are working together and actually they are all related. Both the demigods and the demons they are all descends of Kashyap Muni, are they not the leaders? They are all cousin brothers or half brothers or they are brothers! And they work so hard for so long and then what comes out of the ocean? Poison. The exact opposite of what they want. Now they could have just said, "Forget it, we are going home". We work for nectar, we get poison ______
But they had faith in Vishnu’s words that you are going to get the nectar, just kept churning. Same situation with ourselves. We have to have that faith. We are churning our hearts for nectar, individually, collectively, together but sometimes just the opposite things happen. We're not...its very difficult and you know what the difficulties we have compared to the poison. This poison was about to exterminate all life in the entire universe, thats how powerful it was. And ultimately they went to Krsna and Krsna said, "Go to Siva"and even went with them and Siva drank it all just to show, the Bhagavatam says, there is no quality of a Vaishnava that pleases Krsna more than being willing to endure difficulties for the welfare of others. So this wonderful pastime of the poison eternally glorifies Kalakantha, Nilakantha, Siva as the Vaishnavanam yatha Sambhu, the greatest Vaishnava giving the greatest example of how to make Krsna happy. Now this took some time and then they go on churning, churning, faith in that higher principle and then all sorts of temptations start coming- beautiful elephants and horses and apsaras, surabhi cow, Laxmidevi, goddesses of fortune, everything is coming out and Krsna is warning the demigods, "If you get attracted to any of these things, you are not going to get the nectar, you're going to be distracted. Just focus on the nectar". This is spiritual life, path of bhakti, sometimes nectar comes, sometimes the most wonderful, wonderful opportunities to enjoy are manifested through our devotional service and sometimes the most horrible impediments come in the path of our devotional service. We shouldn't get distracted by any of them. We should carry on performing our duty of churning for the nectar of pure love of God. Whatever may come. The temptations are often times a greater distraction, the nice things are a greater distraction than the horrible things. If we are focused on the essence, saragrahi, focus on the essence of why we are doing it, then even horrible things of the whole story. And the asuras - the demons grab the whole pot for themselves and demi gods are too weak to fight against them. Now imagine what they are going through. They have done all this work. They fully co-operated with Lord Vishnu’s instructions. They suffered a lot in the whole process and finally the nectar comes and the demons take it all. And the demons are already stronger than them, so they can’t fight. And if they drink the nectar then they are going to be millions of times more strong. It appears totally hopeless. Everything is finished for the demigods. In fact if the demons drink all the nectar which they had the full facility to do so there was absolutely nothing that demigods could do about it. They had everything. if they drink it, it would make things Millions of times worse than very the beginning when they approached Vishnu and said we need Your help. And now everything is disturbed. They are absolutely defeated. They are hopeless and helpless. Dramatic story. Imagine the demigod the demons hold the 100% of the nectar that’s gonna give them such power and demigods are standing on the sidelines thinking everything is finished. They turn to Vishnu. That’s all they could do. Fantastic story. They were really crying out for shelter at that state more than ever before. And here the demons, they have all the nectar. All they have to do is just share it and drink it. But their egos, each one wanted the prestige of getting the first drink of the nectar. Yes. So each one was thinking that I am more qualified than the other and they were fighting over the nectar and they became hateful and inimical towards each other. Cause each of the demons was trying to oppose each other one from getting the first, yes. So they were fighting. And that wasn’t just like a playful wrestling match, they were really, Their hearts were burning with envy and enmity toward each other. And they won, they were the winning team. But they wouldn’t let enjoy each other the results of their winning. Very good lesson here. Even in Krishna consciousness, we have the nectar. Sri Caitanya Charitamrita repeatedly echoes this message that a vaishnav is one who takes pleasure in seeing another devotee get nectar. And if a person is opposed or envious of somebody else getting nectar, that person is not vaishnav. And we find here in Prabhupada’s purports. He is very strong. He is talking about people who . . . . several times in this purports, there are many karmis in the dress of devotees. But the Supreme personality of Godhead can detect their purpose. So don’t think that becoming a Vaishnava is just joining a movement. That’s necessary for our spiritual progress. But we have to be willing to make spiritual progress to actually become a vaishnav. Its not the matter that I were tilak and they don’t, so I m better than them. One time a devotee read the news paper and saw what the pope, the previous pope who was very instrumental in getting rid of communism and communists and open the doors to so much devotees’ activities in these iron curtain countries. Had his break lunch and dinner and there was so much meat. And this devotee was giving a class and just blasting . .. see, this is a spiritual leader, and he is eating meat , and this and this and cows and chickens and lambs and goats and . . .
I said to him, of course that’s a defect in one’s spiritual life if you are not following ahimsa, if you are causing harm to other living beings. But may be you know, he is not showing kindness to animals, but he is showing kindness to humans, but you my friend, you might be very nice to animals but look how you treat other vaishnavas, are we kind to each other? Vegetarianism is not just formality, of not eating meat. Its just, it’s a principle of ahimsa, which means to be par dukh dukhi, where another person’s suffering is my suffering and another person’s happiness is my happiness. And that means we have to extend this principle all the way to other humans, even to other devotees. This is the principle, this is the mentality, not just a ritual.
In Krishna consciousness, a vaisanava is a person who loves to see another devotee making advancement making advancement, getting the mercy of the Lord, tasting the nectar. There are different types of competition – there is transcendental competition, and there is just crude, egoistic competition. Prabhupada encourages transcendental competition. I am going to work harder, try to defeat what you do, so that you become inspired to defeat what I do, and I will be more inspired to defest what you do, and you be more inspired to defeat what I do. But we are not envious of each other, we are just trying to help each other, so that together we are doing the most for the pleasure of guru and Krishna. And we are happy to lose, we are happy to lose if somebody is getting glory, and has done so much service, as long as we know that we have done whatever we could do.
Hanuman and that little squirrel – Hanuman was doing big things, the squirrel is doing little things. From a mundane competitive platform, Hanuman defeated the squirrel. But from rama’s position, He didn’t. He sees our intent, the Lord sees our purpose, how we are trying to please Him. The squirrel was doing 100% his capacity as was hanuman. In Rama’s perspective, they both win. Its equal. He sees our love. He doesn’t see the thing, He sees the love, the intention with which it is offered.
So, they are fighting, if they were vaisnavas, it would be completely opposite fight. The nectar will be there, and someone says, “Prabhu you take it first,” “No, no you take it first.” “You are more qualified.”…. “ No, No, actually she should take it first.” This is Vaisnava society, not “Me”, “me”, “I”, “I”, “me” … We are thinking about YOU, We are thinking about WE. So, they have all the secret of success and power in their hands, and they can even assimilate it, because they are so envious of each other. And the demigods, they can’t do anything, they are just watching the demons blaspheming each other, and fighting each other, and really hating each other over this nectar. Can you imagine? They hate each other.
Mayadhaksena prakrti suyatte sacara caram – material nature is under the control of Krishna. Maya is His external energy, inferior energy. Maya knows exactly what is our strength, what is our weakness and she may nourish our strengths, and nourish our strengths so tha your ego gets bigger and bigger and bigger. But then she knows exactly what our weakness and she knows how to crush you, everyone – expert. She is a creative genius – maya, getting power from Krishna.
So, here in this particular story, maya, bewildering the demons so that none of tehm could touch a drop of that nectar because of the envy toward each other. Because of their egos. That’s the problem. Because of their egos, none of them van get any of it. That’s maya.
But then, Visnu appears in His extraordinary incarnation of Mohini. Now please understand, this is not the maya potency. This is Krishna Himself directly coming to bewilder them – very serious pastime. And she comes walking, very young, very beautiful, in the presence of so many brahmacaris, I am going to so much detail, She is very beautiful everything about Her is just perfect – physically, emotionally – everything. Just Her glances, Her smiles, Her movements totally captivated the egos of the demons. They looked at her. She looks at each one of them. And each one of them was thinking, by Her glance, She loves me. And because of that sense, She loves me of all these powerful heros, she sees my prowess, she sees how handsome I am. She sees my accomplishments, she is in love with me.
And therefore because they thought that she honored and had such deep affection for them, their egos were so totally stimulated by that glance that they had complete faith in her. Hare Krsna. And then all the demons, now they united on the higher principle again. They were united to get nectar then when they got it they were fighting over who drinks it first and now they united on the higher principle that they all agreed that whatever Mohini says is right and I know what she says because she loves me. She just went right to the very core of their false egos and they know it but beyond the false egos they were actually completely attracted to Krsna. Everyone, ultimately is attracted to Krsna. Krsna tells in Gita, "All the beautiful, wonderful things in this entire creation are just a tiny little spark of my splendor. The only reason we are attracted to anybody or anything in the entire creation because its a spark of Krsna and Krsna is the complete whole. Can we imagine how attractive He is? So the demons are actually, their hearts, their souls are stirred because they are being attracted by God but because of their egoistic mentality they don't realize its God, they're just attracted. And each is thinking that glance convinced them that she loved only them, that one person and their egos were really really out of control. She loves me. Every one of my brothers is mad after her but she only loves me. Now from the pure devotional perspective, when Krsna is sitting on the bank of Yamuna with the cowherd boys, the gopas, each gopa thinks Krsnas only looking at me and they are in a circle around Him. Its described like lotus flower and Krsnas the whorl of the lotus flower and all the gopas are petals in a circle around Him, there’s 4 and then there’s 8 and 16 and 32 and 64 and then there are hundreds and thousands of gopas. They are all sitting around Krsna eating lunch and Sri Caitanya Caritamrita explains that every Gopa is thinking Krsnas only looking at me. And when Krsna was dancing with gopis in the forest of Vrajbhumi on the bank of Yamuna. During His Raslila each gopi is thinking Krsnas only dancing with me. Of all these other gopis, Hes only with me. But it didn't create envy, it created gratitude. Thats the spiritual world but Mohinin murti on a very very different level she played the same kind of trick. Each asura is thinking she loves only me, she is looking at me. Even if she looks at the others, they would see the glance of the other as, you know, not like what when she looks at me. But they are all thinking that way and then they all unanimously agree we are god brothers (?) of Kashyapa Muni, we are all on the same team as asuras but we are fighting, theres enmity, threes inimicalness between us so bad because we all want to drink this nectar first, theres a major crisis in our dynasty and only you could solve it. You decide who drinks the nectar first because they were all absolutely convinced that she would choose them. And she just speaks the truth, she says “You don't even know who I am, where I am coming from, what my family is. I am wandering alone here. I could be a prostitute, you don’t know anything? How could we put so much faith in me. And the amazing thing is that they thought she is just joking. This is how covered over they are. She is just telling as it is what is just going happen exactly, but they couldn’t here. This strikes so many instructions that we here from Prabhupada that so many things, but we will become enamored and factuated by the ego and Maya that we came here. Lust, envy and ego, pride and greed, when we become influenced by these things. Even it is directly told us through the books through another devotee exactly that what is going to happen and if we don’t do something about it why we cannot here. Because we are intoxicated, Krishna showed His Virat Rupa, but he could not see, because he s so envious. E is so egoistic; he still thought he could defeat Krishna even by seeing the Virat Rupa. That’s how powerful Maya is. So she is telling the straight out the truths and we/they are laughing. So nice, your words are so full of sweetness. And when they all came that they fighting over the nector all tighter give the nector together. They said you decide, because we have complete faith in you only. So what she did next is fascinating. She just smiled and stared talking to all the demons, very sweet talk and very nice smile, other words I am giving myself to you, and giving my association to you. She was just talking, and talking and talking, and while she was talking she was charming and enchanting them. And they didn’t talk and just listening that “you are self controlled, you are big yogis to the highest platform so you can tolerate little inconveniences but there demigods are just nothing, they are of this attitude, and they can’t wait so I am going to distribute little bit of Nectar to them. Because they are so agitated, they are agitated so they can’t wait so I will give a small portion to them and I am going to come back to give a massive portion to you.
Again she is praising their false ego to defeat them, that’s how Krishna, by Maya defeats us by praising our false ego, by infatuating us. They will say yes, yes, you can give nector to them first and then give us. They are new-fights that are the spirit of what’s happening here. She was already giving the nector to the demigods and the demons are just sitting there. The Mohini murthy is going to distribute the nector and to make the event as completely auspicious they took bath and they put on flower garlands and ornaments and they stated doing yaznas so that they can make it ritualistically auspicious and then they are sat. And Mohini Murthy had the demigods to sit at a distance away. And She was right there associating with the demons by talking to them, laughing at them, smiling at them and capturing their minds and the she said you are all such hero’s, you are all such soft controlled, you have attracted my heart by your qualities, as a formality you know, I have to give something to them (demigods). But the demigods lower in qualities and never weight. On a completely transcendental platform when Prabhupada would give cookies He would give them to the children first, because they can’t weight. So Mohini Murthty went over to the demigods to a distant place and the demons are watching very proudly, very proudly. And when they saw that she was giving large amounts to each, she is giving huge amounts to the demigods but the demons didn’t want to displease Her, so they didn’t say anything, they didn’t do anything. They just sat there simply watching for the nectar. Only Rahu, Rahu was very intelligent among the demons and in this case he disguised himself as Devata and sat among the devatas. And opened his mouth as Mohini Murthy distributing the nectar by poring in each mouth, when Rahu got Chandra and Surya, they recognized him. This is actually asura in disguise among the demigods. And then Sudharsana charka came out and cutoff his head. But his head alive because it got nectar. She cut it off the remaining part of the body from the head. Rest of his body is dead. This is another thing, we can fool people around us but we can never fool Krishna. Because he sees our intentions, he sees our motives. He doesn’t see what we do but he sees why we do. And it’s that “why” distinguishes a karmi from vaishnav. It’s the “what” as well the “why”, what is incomplete without “why” but the “why” is incomplete without realizing “what”. We have to have the right intentions and we have expressed the right intensions through our actions and our words. All the demigods, until the very last drop of the pot emptied into the mouths of the demigods, and then demons still watching, wondering what she is going to do for me, she definitely loves me, She has to do something for me, and then the combination of whole story when Mohini murthi changes her form into Vishnu, the ultimate arch enemy of the demons, and she gets her Garuda and flies away, that is the end of the story, in this way demigods ultimately got what Krishna promised them but not without lot of challenges, lot of patience, perseverance and faith. ‘man mana bhava mad bhakto mad yaji’, Krishna promised, each and everyone of us, you will come to me without fail I will give you ecstatic love of God, you come to my abode to live eternally in my pastimes, just always think of me, worship me, and offer your homage unto me, which means just follow the path of bhakti, Srila prabhupada gave a promise on behalf of Krishna, to chant sixteen rounds attentively, guard against the ten offenses, follow the four regulative principles, and live by the character and qualities of what He has given us in the books, He guaranteed that we can attain perfection, it is a promise, so we accept the promise, but there will be challenges, and in this challenges, extreme reversals coming in every devotees life, sometimes it seems hopeless, it is so far away because of our anarthas are so strong, but if we just persevere with patience and faith, Rupa Goswami explains the qualities of surrender, enthusiasm and patience, that is what we find in this story, Krishna is expecting the enthusiasm to perform our duties, in our case it is enthusiasm to follow the principles of Bhakti, enthusiasm to serve, enthusiasm to chant, enthusiasm to hear, enthusiasm to associate, enthusiasm to worship, but with patience. Because we may not feel anything, we may even feel the opposite, opposite things may be happening to us, but when we have enthusiasm, when we have faith, faith in the promise, faith in the prospects, and that faith comes by hearing and chanting in the association of devotees, it is critical, it is foundational, and whatever the twists and turns in the spiritual path that we take, in the end it is hundred percent guaranteed if we just remain faithful, the nectar awaits us, but without challenge we may not appreciate it, even if it comes. Krishna has a purpose a divine, brilliant expert purpose, a perfect purpose, putting us through the challenges of our life. And in the end Sri Sri Radha Gopinath removes the curtain of our own egos that stand between us, and bestow their merciful all beautiful darshan, which is the supreme nectar of all nectars, and then we get the truly taste and sweetness of their holy names, ‘hkhr’ echoes in the forest of Bombay, Can we have one question because Vrajvihari looks really agitated to ask the question.
Q. Thank you so much Maharaj for the class, you are mentioning about how Srimad Bhagavatam, tries to break our faith in illusion, so that we can also develop faith in truth, both should go together simultaneously, I wanted to ask you this question last few years, especially four, five years while preaching, one unique challenge that comes up is people in Bombay especially are spreading lot against vedic culture, lot of pamplets are being distributed, blastpheming the deity worship, and cow protection and things like that, so devotees gets agitated, although we know that Prabhupada we should not identify ourselves with Hindu, Muslim, American, Indian, we are not the body but we get agitated and we feel we wanted to do something, so while preaching can we also present arguments, which breaks …
Maharaj: Prabhupada with the light of knowledge, dissipate the darkness of all this propaganda of ignorance, yes, it is our duty, to be very strong in counteracting, these misleading speculations, they are misdirecting the innocent people, we have Sakshi Gopal Prabhu here from Kurukshetra, Kurukshetra is place where Krishna told Arjuna. We have to fight for Krishna, not for ourselves, but for Krishna. Bhagavad Gita is about Krishna telling Arjuna to fight to protect the world from ignorance, and exploitation. Arjuna is a Kshatriya fighting according to his propensity, we are essentially a Brahminical culture, so we don’t fight with weapons, our weapon is holy name, our weapon is the truth. So on humble but enthusiastic bold way we should challenge the illusory propaganda that is leading the world, universal principles,
Q: Actually Maharaj, some times we have to take the names also, like for example, this lot of Islamic people are making propaganda in India, and lot of christian missionaries, the young boys that come and ask questions, and when we answer them we are tempted to tell the flaws in that system also, Prabhupada said we should not criticize the other religions, but the kind of propaganda it is going on, it is very difficult to resist, So I was thinking can we actually explains the truth, but at the same time may be to explain what they are preaching is very dangerous, that actually shake their faith in their path, can we do that also, Is that OK?
Maharaj: It depends on time, place and circumstances, but in principle we defend the truth, that is pour duty, factually because the vedic path of spirituality is so deep and so broad in the sense of understanding the essence, it can embrace the essence of other religions, when people are –they can not tolerate another one, because it does not fit in that tiny little scenario of what religion is, but the Vedas are so deep and so broad, and that is why, when Zorastains persecuted in Iran, they came to India and they found shelter, when the Buddhists are being persecuted in Tibet, they came to India and found shelter, When jews are persecuted by romans two thousand years ago, they found shelter in India, that has provided shelter since then. One of the oldest jews communities on the planet are in India, Christianity, at times they are being persecuted, they found shelter in India, factually the muslims in the India are freest Muslims in the entire world, they do not have leaders forcing them to follow according to their conception, but they have total freedom, yes, because of the openness and the depth of the vedic culture people from all religions have freedom, now the same people who have found shelter here because of the graciousness of Vedic culture, now they are attacking it, trying to show their own sectarian, --as the only way, and because we don’t match them, because the vedic culture doesn’t math them, so we are deluded in dangerous, this is the reality of situation, so we should not oppose other religions, but we oppose ignorance, and sectarianism, which breaths hatred, not love, Is that answer your question.
