The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami

 

At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months,  Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga  "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

Radhanath Swami On Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Thakur Appearance Day

These appearcance days, disappearance days of great vaishanava achrayas give us a wonderful opportunity to remember the teachings and examples of these great personalities who are achrayas. achrayas means one who teaches by their words by their life it is very appropriate of this time during our classes on the chaitanya charitamrita .we are in the midst of reading about the contemplation and mediatation of sri advaita acharya .how he was ,although an incarnation of godhead himself .he felt himself in a mood of a servitor or he felt himself incapable incpmpetnet to deliver the conditional souls from the mires of illusion in the midst of this age of Kali in this age of quarrel and hypocracy .therefore we have been reading about how advaita achraya in his heart was thinking how could I find any satisfaction or pleasure even in my loving relation with Krishna ,when I see all of my brothers and sisters here in this world suffering due to forgetfulness ,suffering due to illusion and this created a feeling of deep great compassion with in his heart and therefore he decided to call out in humble prayer of submission for lord sri Krishna to descend srila bhakti vinod thakur present the same compassionate spiritual frame of mind .Thakur bhakti vinod was a shktyawesh avatar ,he was also an empowered incarnation of god head he descended to this world only for purpose of establishing the true principles of cri chaitanya mahaprabhu but he could see all around him such a degraded and fallen condition in human society ,such rampant materialism such perverted understandings and practices in the name of religion , and he saw around him even in the name of sri chaitanya mahaprabhu’s teachings it was so rare to find anyone who had a conception of what sri chaitanya mahaprabhu was really teaching.there was a tremendous movement of sahajiyasam at that time ,sahajiya means one who takes everything cheaply one who thinks without properly disciplining oneself according to of the principles of Krishna consciousness made out by srila rupa goswami ,one can immediately attain high level of spirituality .and he saw that the general population wasbeing mislead by such sahajiya .many of these sahajiya group were endorsing illicit sex even in the name of inacting the devine conjugal rasa of radha and krishna.many they saw more meaning in simply bhajan kirtans for the sake of crying and these emotional tears of so called ecstasy were seen as something very much the essence and the purpose and the means of self realization and neglecting the rules and regulations to control one’s life to bring one to a point where one can actually purify one’s heart .so in this way people showing all sorts of ecstasies , weeping all sorts of tears people ,but not teaching the real philosophy and life as given by gauranga mahaprabhu and srila rupa goswami. And also off course people engaged in activities of devouchoury and using sri gauranga mahaprabhu’s name to justify it .so bhakti vinod thakur was thinking in this totally materiallis tic condition of life what can I do ,he did his best. but in the mood of sri advaita achraya he began to pray.he prayed for a ray of Vishnu to appear in this world to establish the true teachings of sri gauranga mahaprabhu.because you see advaitacharya he understood he viewed that it was the time for Krishna to appear himself so he called for Krishna directly .but bhakti vinod thakur not wanted to interfere with krishna’s schedule plans as he gives in shastras .he did not ask for Krishna to appear krishna I know you do not appear again in this age of kali yuga until the kalki avatar so I will not ask that of you .but he asked for what was as good as Krishna himself his empowered representative his empowered devotee the ray of Vishnu to come to give light to this world of darkness ,so he prayed and he prayed and offcourse Krishna can not refuse the sweet and pure prayer of his surrendered devotee,specially when that prayer is in the mood of preaching in the compassioanate sprit of bhakti vinod thakur .so srila bhakti vinod thakur who at that time was living in sri purushottam kshetra jagananth puri dham,he had a beautiful son ,he was named vimal Prasad dutta,vimal is the name of the internal potency of lord jagannath vimal Prasad means the mercy of the internal potency of sri jagannath deva.and when he was born all the thirty two markings of a very great personality were upon him. And procuring enough amblicon cord was raped like a sacred thread of a Brahmin around his neck and his waste .and when various astrologers saw him and looked in to his horoscope they were struck with wonder that they had never seen any horoscope like this.one astrologer said that this personality will be such a great personality that according to all my readings he will change the course of human society. and when he was six months old it was the time for the ceremony where a child takes his first grain,at that time the rathyatra was taking place and rathyatra would come right by the house of bhakti vinod thakur he lived right on that road just a few minutes’ walk from the jagannath dev’s temple and for three days the acrt remained there it would not move.so during that time right in front of the house bhakti vinod tahnakur’s wife whose name was bhagavati devi she brought the baby child and presented him at the lotus feet of sri jagannath deva and just at that time the garland fell around his neck and they were very happy.and then they gave him from jagannath’s mahaprasad right in the presence of jagannath they gave him his first grains.srila prabhupada tells us how when he was only two or three years old he took one mango that was meant to be offered to Krishna his father said these mangos must be first offered to Krishna, he said what a retched sinful person that I am trying to enjoy what belongs to Krishna. I will never take a mango as long as I live ,and he followed that vow.srila prabhupada told us that when the devotees would give him mango he would say even though he was old man he would say I am an offender I can not eat mango. he took so seriously ,in this way he was teaching us by his examples how seriously we should take our life in Krishna consciousness.it is the tendencies for devotees to take things very lightly to be very whimsical in what we say about others and what we do what we eat. But srila bhakti siddhanta swraswati thakur wanted to reveal to us how a devotee should be very very cautious and very carefull and very serious to do everything very properly in Krishna ‘s service .w e should never offend Krishna and vaishanavas.so bhakti vinod thakur saw in his son that Krishna has fulfilled his inner most prayer. And how brilliant of a student he was even from the age of seven years old he had already memorized gita he could already give the perfect explanation and purports and through his life .He and his father they went through great great pains taking efforts to establish the pure truth of sri gauranga mahapranhu’s teachings. bhakti siddhanta saraswati thakur he became very unpopular ,he had to undergo great persecution because he was against the idea of cast by birth, and he was giving the mantra the hare Krishna mahamantra to every one without discrimination .it is described that when they were living in jagananth puri .when he was just a child they moved from puri dham to a place in Bengal called ran ghat where his father was shifted he was a majistrate in the british courts.and later on they went back to jagannath puri for some time and bhakti vinod thakur he obtained a little piece of land where he constructed a bhajan kutir and they lived together at that time there was a baba ji who would come regularly to their classes to hear bhakti vinod thakur speaking bhakti siddhanta speaking. he was very much impressed he was a very famous baba ji. And he had belief that the hk mantra should not be chanted out loud it should be only chanted in japa it is such a mahamantra such a sacred mantra it should not be sung in kirtan so therefore what he did is he was teaching to mahamantra to chant in japa uttering in silence but for kirtan he created another mahamantra that mantra was “nitai gaur radheshyam hare krsna hare rama” now when bhakti vinod and bhakti siddhant heard this first of all they understood that this mantra is rasa bhas it is mixing of contrarary mellows and also tha prupose of this mantra was In repacemnet of mahamantra for kirtan and they understood that the according to teachings of lord gauranga mahaprabhu and according to the teaching or srila Rupa Goswami, this mahamantra should be chanted in kirtan in deed as a matter of fact Bhakti Siddhant and Bhakti vinod thakur preached that in japa and kirtan, kirtan is most imp. They are both essential but the sankirtan the congregational chanting is especially in this age of kaliyuga is recommended so they preached very strongly against this mantra and they preached very strongly for the chanting of hare Krishna mantra so because of this they became unpopular in Jagannath Puri(Laughs) and many people criticized them and threatened them but you see they were such, they wanted to protect real truth of Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s teachings because nobody else was really doing this.There were so many great babajis who were maintaining highest standards but they were basically keeping to themselves and they were not coming out and fighting against and reliving that discrepancy in name of teaching of Sri Gaurang Mahaprabhu. So later I am giving just a very brief sketch of his glorious life, it is described that one time his father was to give a lecture on what is brahmin and what is a vaishnava but he was feeling ill hwe wa kind old bhakti siddhant saraswati thakur vimal Prasad he went to give this lecture and how expertly becoz it was filled with cast Brahmins.what he did first began to glorify the cast of Brahmins and the qualities of Brahmins, attributes of Brahmins, imp of following and surrendering to Brahmins so all the Brahmins their hearts were melting like anything they were so much thinking ahh he is great scholar we have never heard any one glorifying our cast like him. So they really their hearts, their minds, their ears everything was suurendering to the beautiful discourse of srila BS so pleasing to them and every one (17.26).and he turned whole thing around and explained that Brahmin is not by birth; yes we have exalted the prominence and importance of Brahmins but even if a person is born in a family of dog eaters he is better than Brahmin if he is chanting the holy name and you can initiate any one in a Brahmin order whatever their birth is if they simply have quality of a vaishnava and so in this way they became very much defeated. And people were coming and standing in line to touch his lotus feet . he also wrote his commentary on Surya(18.10) Siddhant and he was great astrologer as well and for this he was awarded the name Saraswati, BSSon another occasion when he was living in the his father was very much anxious to shift in to Navadwip Dhamto live there so Srlia BSST he moved to Navdwip Dham and alongwith his father BVT toplace called Godrum Dwip which is near surabhi kunj and there BVT was giving discourses each day and shortly after arriving at GD witrh the help of Srila JDB, srlia BVT discovered the actual birth place of sri CM so there was very very great param hansa who was living in the Vrinadavan from many many years when he heard that Gauranga Mahaprabhus birthplace has been discovered and that BVT was giving wonderful lectures on the life and teacings of Sri CM this param hansa was very much anxious to see the beautiful birthside of the lord and to associate with the BVT. His name was Gaur Kishore Das BM. And he was disciple of bhagavd das BM who was disciple of Jagganth Das BM and he came, Gaur KDBM Came to Navdwip and he was wearing when he was came to Navdwip he was wearing tiger skin hat and had bag full of (20.30)and japa beads and little bag of paraphernalia for puja. And this is how BSS first saw his Gurudev(Maharaj laughs) and he was thinking how this man was very pure, this man is very great, so BVT urged him very strongly that he should accept initiation from GKDBM so he approached GKDB, BM WAS VERY HUMBLE he was in his earlier life he was grain merchant and at the young he left his family and he left everything went to vrindavan and became very very empowered empowered paramhansa. So much that of everyone all of vrindavan all the sadhus, the sages, the babas, the vrajvasis they respected GK the most. He was just so iilustrious in his realizations in his purity in his empowerement, especially his renounciation, in the mood of divine separation from the lord so BSST he requested that u kindly if it is u r divine mercy wiil u accept me as u r disciple. GK was very humble very much like Loknath Gosami`s relationship with NRDT. He said u r such a qualified person u r coimg from such a high birth u r so highly educated so brilliant such a incredible preacher, I am just a simple man and I am not educated at all (22.33) how can be ur Guru it is besides that I have already vowed that not to take any disciple in my life so BBST was feeling very much heart broken and his father BVT was very much insisting w/o sm what is use of u r existence so BSST approach GKDB again and bm said I already vowed that I will not take any disciples and BSS said but I have alredy in my heart taken shelter at ur lotus feet. And if u do not deliver me from(23.33) birth and death then what is my hope so he asked with such devotion and humility that GKDB said I will pray to Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu and I will see in what way he directs me. Time went by and BSST came to GKDB and with great humility and submissiveness one day he asked have u prayed to MP whether u can accept me and he said I forgot. So BSS reminded him(Maharaj laughs)but with love and devotion and srila GKDBM, he was approached by BSS again and BSS said have u offered u r prayers to Sriman MP he replied that yes I prayed but did not give me answer. So do not think it is possible so BSST at that time started to wip and his heart was broken and he told there is no purpose in my human form of life w/o guru one can not attain Krsna and w/o attaininig Krsna this human form life has no value. There no reason for me to go on living for another moment and he prepared himself to commit suicide. And srila GKDB could see how really seriously and honestly he felt his life absolutely void and vacant any meaning w/o the mercy of sri gurudev. So at that time GKDB his heart melted by humble words and great determination of BSST he agreed to initiate him. And he gave him a name Varshbhanvidevi dayat das which is a name of for Radharani.(26.20)Sri Varshbhanvidevi dayatay that was the name GKDB gave him.(question from audience---- Varshbhanvidevi dayatay means what )it’s a name of Radharani that’s all(maharaj laughs)(26.40)actually we can look in a song book what is the word to word translation for(26.48)is somebody has song book? So shortly after this Srila BSST decided to perform tapasya and near the yogpith there was a beautiful track of land which is very sacred in Navdwip it is the place of house of Srila Chandrashekhar Acarya who is maternal uncle of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu and there he constructed little hut Bhajan kutir and vowed to chant 3 lakhs of the names of Krsna everyday mahamantra 3 lakhs everyday following in the footsteps of Haridas Thakur.and he vowed to chant 1 billion names and he calculated that of by chant 3 lakhs everyday after nine yrs I have chanted 1 billion names. He need vowed not to be (28) until, not to leave that vow until it was fulfilled. So did like that and he just soak some rice he eat that everyday Ganges Water and even then not (28.20) completed all of his chanting and when his roof caved in it started raining and he so busy in chanting instead of fixing his roof he just took an umbrella he sit in his house and with an umbrella he will chant (maharaj laughs)it was explained by him he describes himself how lord gauranga MP appeared to him GKDB was very proud of him such austerity only his just like Raghunath Das Goswami(28.53)GKDB is used to call by his disciple my prabhu.(maharaj laughs)and of course MP appeared to him after some yrs doing his tapasya and told him u must not to sit here in holy dham to chant the holy names all everybody else in this world to suffering due to maya u go to cities, u go to the places of population to spread the glories of the holy name. so BSST is very much in his sweet mood it is described before he after the time when srila BV & GKDB both left this world it was very pleasant situation for many yrs before that beoz gkdb very often would live right at the house of BVT. Bvt constructed a bhajan kutir for him right in front of his own house.so three of them would spend so many hours, days yrs together just discussing Krsna Consc.but after they left his separiton was very very deep very great and he was feeling so much in the anguish of separation that several people who had preached to they very strongly appealed to him that u must take up the mission of u r father he was feeling so humble now these two great acaryas has gone what can I do they are so great what can I possibly do. I am helpless better I just stay here in mayapur and just chant the holy names and try to purify my own life and this is his humility. They told no u must u must kindly help the world BVTs mission is resting now on u so he heard the voice of his father and his guru speaking through them and he took on this great mission so he took the vow of sanyaas he saw that there was no, no one more inspiring to him than his own gurudev so he gave himself the order of sanyaas before a picture of his own spiritual master srila GKDB.and that time he became known as Srila BSS. Interesting becoz BV and BSS mean the same thing haaa… what is vedant mean? (from audience—end of knowledge)and what is siddhant mean? (from audience-- conclusion)conclusion of knowledge haaa… what is the conclusion of all knowledge? bhakti (maharaj laughs)what is the end of all knowledge bhakti. So how much he preached? So strongly. he established over 64 maths in the through out all of india initiated tens and thousands of people to the chanting of the holy name and most of all he infused that preaching spirit in the hearts. so many of his disciples who dedicated their lifes and souls only for this purpose. Although disciples of Srila BSS haa so many such empowered pure lustrious souls so deeply learned so deeply (33.32)in pure devotional service and amongst all of them we can understand how imp Srila P is BVS becoz all of them none of them took the deepest heartfelt desire of BS. Which was that the holy of Krsna and teaching of Lord chaitanya be spread through out the entire world. SP as well as all the disciples of Srila BSS were directly of indirectly were given this instruction of the preachers. SP in Calcutta when he first met his guru maharaj his guru maharaj gave him this instruction and before his gurudev SP as we were (34.48)this morning was always feeling himself simply the insignificant menial servant . how SP is teaching although SP is the most empowered the most illustrious acarya practically in a history of these age of kali. He was (35.14) this morning revealing how a real acarya thinks said when I was only a young man my gurudev gave me this order take this message of Lord Chaitnya spread it through out the world in English language. At that time he accepted BSST in his heart as his eternal SM and father but he said he had just married and he had new born child he was also manager in a chemical company pharmaceutical company. So he was thinking that now how can I do this that I have such so many responsibilities I have just assumed(36.09)family occupation children he said he did not take up the order externally at that time although in his heart he ws always meditating this is my life and soul . many years later when he was when he retired from Grihstha life took sanyaas then he accepted that now I must do this but this morning he was saying at that time I was thinking it is not possible when he first gave me the instruction he said that is becoz I was in maya I should have done it then(maharaj laughs)see some people they think that they are great devotee to impress their disciples they have to carry a profile of that I am flawless, I cant make mistakes. Prabhupad (37.10)flawless Prabhupad never made mistakes. In the sense that whatever he did that was with love and devotion to Krsna externally it may appear this way or that to our vision whatever is offer with love and devotion even though externally it may or may not be understate it is perfect. SP, he was admitting right before his disciples that in my heart I must say I was in maya (maharaj laughs) of course no one believes him that we believe that he actually feels that way. (maharaj laughs) and his guru maharaj , he explains said, his guru maharaj was always very much please with SP. BSST used to always comment that this Abhaya Charan which was his initiated name, he listens very carefully he is very submissive and how he is anxious to hear said because he is anxious to hear so nicely therefore mark my words he will be very anxious to speak very nicely. He also said because he hear so nicely with such submission anything he writes you print no need to edit BSS have many magazines (38.45)so how much we are indebted to Srila BSST becoz it was he that planted seed in SPs heart to take this message of LC and acc to time, place and people to spread it through out the world and disciplic succession means just like a tree a seed grows into a tree and that tree produces other seeds and that seed produces other trees for the preacher becoz he has received the seed and he has watered that seed and it is grown into a tree he has so many seeds to plant in others hearts so that very seed Srila BSST planted in SPs heart. SP came to the west to plant those that same seeds in our hearts and so many others and just like SP was explaining this morning and he explained to us so many times that my guru maharaj has given me this mission of spreading the seed of love that he has planted in my heart he said my humble request to all of my disciples you just put everything else aside and just assist me in fulfilling the great desire of my SM and now that seed is in our hearts by his causeless mercy and what is his request the same that seed which was given by BS to me plz put everything else aside give u r life to assisting the mission of sri gurudev by spreading this glorious teachings of sankirtan movement in every town and village and there is no greater way to achieve the mercy of the lord. This evening hopefully some of you can come at borivali there is program and there we will be speaking and discussing the teachings of BSST. So many of the sayings that we use everyday which are so concised crystal clear and contained the whole essence of KC come from them one out many there will be discussing he said there is no problem except lack of KC.
