The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

Today we are reading the wonderful occasion in which the SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD –Matsya avatar explains the knowledge of the Veda to his disciple Maharaja satyavrata. The Vedas are great mystery. Because whatever one wants to attain in life whether one may be a demon like hiranyakashipu or Ravana who wanted torture …and consume tremendous power for exploitative purposes. In studying the Vedas they can learn how to perform the proper sacrifices by which they can attain that. If one wants a good wife, a good husband, lots of nice money, good health, by properly following the principles of various sections of the Vedas one can easily attain them. If one wants to attain the 8 mystic siddhis to be able to effortlessly perform miracles which will fascinate the general masses it is not too difficult because the process is given within the Vedas. If one wants to put an end to all of this temporary wrangling with this world which is ultimately frustrating and become liberated from all material connections mukti niravana one can also attain that stage in various sections of the Vedas. But here it is said vedasya sarvair aham eva vaidya vedantakrt sa ca.veda ve caham. The ultimate purpose of all Vedas is to know Krsna and love Krsna. Prema pumarta mahan. Tht is the supreme goal of all knowledge. The summum bonnum the culmination. The siddhanta,. You know HDG AC BVSP because he understood the essence of the Vedas so well the conclusion of the Vedas it was his initiated name BSST abaycaranaravinda. But some of his god brothers to give the world the opportunity to understand how he has extracted the essence of all Vedas and who has presented perfectly the conclusions of the Vedanta. Siddhanta sid means perfect. Anta means conclusion. Siddhanta means the conclusion of all perfect knowledge?. What is the perfection of all knowledge Bhakti. Devotional Service to Sri Krsna. Surrender. Sarav dharman ….But some of his god bro was thinking that this is kind of confusing because we have given him the same name as our guru maharaj and there will obviously be misunderstanding whom we are talking about. So they gave him a name which meant identically same thing but with a diff name. Bhakti Vedanta. Siddhanta means conclusion of all knowledge is the Vedas. And vedanta. Veda means perfect knowledge and anta means the conclusion. So BV and BS exactly mean the same thing same world but with a diff sound. So they named him AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad. And then his disciples out of great love and affection called him Prabhupad. This means that whose feet even the great masters sit. To understand the true essence or conclusion of the Vedas to come to the conclusion of bhakti must hear the Vedas. Not simply by reading. One must learn it under the training of SM. Here the Lord himself incarnated to explain the Vedas to satyavrata. It is explaining here Lord Brahma was sleeping at that time. And of course we know that Lord Brahma is the first and original guru in our diciplic succession so therefore the Lord has to personally come himself and do the job for guru. But to understand the principle of parampara which is most imp part of our spiritual development. Lord Brahma originally heard the Vedic knowledge from the supreme topmost Spiritual Master Krishna. Krsna is jagat guru. When Lord Brahma was first created Krsna spoke to him within heart. Tene braham adikavaya muhayant…and he told Lord Brahma to perform tapasya. This is very significant for those who want to understand Absolute Truth. After telling Brahma to perform tapasya, sacrifice for the pleasure of his guru Krsna after Krsna saw that he was genuinely sincere and he was ready to everything and anything for the pleasure of his Guru then Krsna revealed personally all knowledge to Bramha to his first SM in the parampara. And then Lord Brahma he explained the same science as he has heard it with his divine realization to his son and disciple Narada muni. What was narada munis qualification how much anxious he was to hear. In his previous birth we understand that he was just a young boy from a very low caste sudra but he considered himself not for any other purpose except realizing God. By the mercy of the great sadhus because he served and heard submissively from the great devotees of the Lord. The seed of enthusiasm and eagerness awakened in his heart and he was so eager for Krsna. Even his own mother died he decided that this is Krsna mercy now I have no other responsibilities except running for him and him alone. He traveled through the cities through the towns through the villages, through the agricultural fields and last to the jungles. And there he gained realization of Sri Krsna but then K disappeared and told him that for the rest of your life u will not see me. But I want you to be so eager for me that throughout your life. You are so anxious and so eager and so enthusiastic for me and me alone that by that time you leave this body u will a completely purified soul. This is the price of KC, The eagerness to know about Krishna. The eagerness to know K the eagerness to hear about Krsna the eagerness to chant his glories and to serve the SM and the Dev. Anfd if u actually dontot want KC to be a mechanical process this is what u must do u must be eager whtever service u do donot just do it because just u have to do it. Do it so well with so much enthu and be anxious for the next servoice. Let the dev just …in DS tht should be our eagerness tht should be our price of KC. If u don’t feel eager act eager. K will see tht through tht sacrifie u wanted and he will fulfill tht desire. So narada muni was certainly a worthy disciple. He would not think before the knowledge of K he would not think else except knowledge for K as his goal of life. he performed great tapasya, therefore when B instructed him his heart was a fertile field to realize the AT. And then narada instructed the incarination of Godhead himself vyasa dev. Vyasadev is a saktya vesa avatart. But inorder to shoew the people proper path he was also very eager. It is explained tht after writing on the order of his GM all the vedic literatures he was not satisfied, he was so anxious and eager to present only pure DS-. Tht great enthusiasm tht anxiety in his heart was so strong tht nothing else in this world can satisfy him except fulfilling the prder of his guru and it ewas tht time narada muni came VD was sitting on the nank of saraswato at tht sacred cave in badroka ashram do u remember we all went th-. Tht was the place narada muni instructued VD. And Vyas dev he had a very great great disciple. And Today I would like to speak abt this great dsisciplebecause Yday hapopedn to be the app day of this great acarya. And since we didn’t have the chance to glorify hium as we shoulsd I would like to speak briefly about the great glorius life of sri madvacarya, Today is the app day of srila ramanuja charya. Tonight we will discuss his pastimes and a drop from his ocean of his life of glories. Let us speak for a few min describing a single droipp of his nectarian pastimes of srila madvacarya. He was born in a very sacre´d üplace in the mangalore distriuct of south India. A place which is called udipi. It is very sacred place.because it is described tht after the great incarination parasuram defeated all the ksatriyas many many times over. He conquered the whole world. But then since he was born as a brahmana he deceided tht I will go to the himalyas and I will perform tapasya study Vedanta chant the holy names and live like Brahman and I have donemy work as a ksatriya. So he gave all of his land to Kasyapa muni one of the great prahapatis. But then he had nowhere for him self . Spo he deceoided he wanted a place for himself for he can just be for himself for peace so wht he did just close to tht place udipi there is a high mountain. And parasuram toolk his bow and threw it not his bow his chopper. He toolk his chopper and he trew it in to the ocean a great dist and then he demaned the ocean to woithdraw itselkf to where he left the chopper. So the entire vast ocean which we call today Arabian sea completlkya reversed its course upt o the point ehre the chopper was and there was a dry lanmd. It was called parasuram ksetra. Tht was his land. Mr sethi Your r from this area I believe did I tell the story correctly. We have some of his decendents here today. So in this very very holy and sacred place madhvacarya took his borth 752 yrs ago from this very day today. And he was born from this shiva lalay brahmana family and his name was given at borth vasudev. He was an extraordinary child. This young boy vasudev when he was only 5 yrs old it is described tht his father has accumulated very very great debts., he was vbeing harrased because he could not pay his debta. So vasudev this The young boiy seeing this he performed a great miracle. Wht he did is there is a tamarind tree behind his house tht tamarind tre isstill today there till you can see it. And As you know from the tamarind tree 100 and 100s of seeds fall to the ground every day. So each as it fell to the gnd it turned in to gold coin.and vasudev told his father wht is the pbm. K who provides there is no need to worryl have faith and his father paid off the debts. Also whren he only 5 yrs old. There was a great pr fiul demon who took the form of a serpant his name was manimanm and this maniman was terrorizing the whole area by killing people with his very great veno´m. ah. Sop wht madva did was his oneday thr was a certain place you cvan see it it was all there he was standing on a trock and this gigantic pr ful serpant came tao attack him. He was so pr ful tht as he crawled he was so angry tht he didn’t literally felt the impression of his body in the rocs and it is still there. And he came to madvacarya who was only a 5 yr old boy. And madvacarya at tht time vasudev he toll the tooe from his toe and crushed this serpant head and killed him. His mother was very attached to him., He would sometimes go playing here or there and his mother will be worroied and she would call him. Whereever he was in one jump he would be able to come right before of his mother. This may sound extra oradinary but try to understand the nature of MA or vasudev s birth. He was none other than the incarination of vayu. He was the son of god of wind.t he predominating deity of the air. And hew hjad such noble virtuis and gloriuzs borothers as hanuman and bhiuma. So wht uis iut tht such a great sould cannot do. Ofcourse the nature of such great sould is thet they always they fgive always happiness and sistress to thoise who loive him. Madvacarya when he was 5 yrs old also revceived the sacred thread inititation and when he was 12 he deceided wht is the use of this family life. I want to dedicate my life to the mission of delivering all fallen souls from the clitsches of illision and maya. He loved his fathetr he loved his mother more dearly than you can imagin but there was a burning burning dersire with in the core of his hreat to helo relieve the suffering of all livning beings. therefore at tender age of 12 he deceided to take sanyas and his father was furious, heart broken and everything else you can omagine.. fater would be. Hois father was weeoing crying begging him. You cannot do this you you’re your responsibilities you cannot destroy our lives in this way. But madvacarya knowing tht if he tool sanyas his father would automatically libverated and go back to GH. But wht abt every body else who r suffering due to ignorance because thy fdo not know K VV maharaj is going to dress srinathji today. He is the head pukjari at srinath ji temple. Ah. So VV his most dear disciple madhva for the sake of preaching to the world his mission of compassion he was willing even to hurt the most near and dear to him. He walked out of tht house and bever to come back and accept the solemn vow of a sanyasi and began to travel, hje acceoted sanyas from one very very great acarya pof the name acyutrapreksha. AP upon giving tis 12 yrs to this child purnbapragya tirta and PPT began to travel far and qwode poreaching the glories of Sri K. at one place a very very learned scholar and a very gentla Brahman by bame satya tirta became his disciple anb together they deceided to travel together by foot to the holyp place of bradrika ashram so purna pragya tirta as well as staya tirta they traveled 1000 and 1000 of miles way to the peaks fo the himalayasa and when they attained sri badrinath dham they went to the cave to srila vedavyasa das and there he acceoted di´ksa or initiatioin. There he receoived ztranscendental knowledge from VV and VV instructed him and on the nasisi of those insptructiuons madvavacarya wrote his comm. On BG. After staying thr for some times with rejuveniated revived in doubled enthusiasm he came from to the himalyas to preach the glories of bhakti. His scholarship was so intense tht followers if false doctrines would flee for their lives when they hear tht he was coming to their towns because philosophicall he can dismantle any erroneous teachings but he has such dev to sri K. He spent hours and hours a day singing beautifuks bhajans and kirtans he loves kirtans and tears woulds irll from his eyes because of great great sweet and incnocent devotion he was given the name madvacharay, after sometime sripoad nmadhvacharya he deceuded to return back to badrikaashram to see his guru VV on his way a tiger attaked satyatirta and he was abt to devover this poor sadhu madhvacharya with his great strength he with his own hands parted the tiger and the tiger went after him to kill him and with one sriking blow he killed him. Of course the tiger was liberated meeting his end in the hands of such a merciful saint. There is an another story on his way to badrika asham they were traveling and had to cross one river at tht time there was great conflict between muslims and hindus in thtt area because muslims who were rulig India and muslim soldieres would not allow any hindu to cross the river otherwise they would punish them and sometimes kill them madhvacharaya kknowing tht he had service to do did not care for these restriction so he simply crossed the river so he was arrested and rought to the king so when the king saw the purity the gentelness and great dev og madhvas the muslim king his jeart melted. And ordered there no longer should there be any more conflict or disturbances between hindus and muslim it is too bad tht mthere is no madvacarya around today. Then the two religions got along too peacefully and the king offered madvacarya a whole kingdom and massive wealth in appreciation for his qualities but madvacarya said no need. And then he returned to badrika ashram and there he lived there with second time with VV. Even such a great sould when came before his guru would be humble than the blade of grass. He would fall at the feet pof his guru with all humility and submissiveness tht I know nothing please instruct me. This is the true qualification however learned we are however advanced we are apiritually we should know tht the real fruit of all our spiritual virtues is our humility and our submissiveness and our willingness to serve the lotus feet of our guru and the vaishnavas, So wen madvacarya returned to udipi ther was a famous story in which it is explained tht madva was siting on the banks of ocean sitting in the dand and at tht time there was a boat a cargoi ship tht was coming from dwaraka and thr was a storm and the boat was abt to sink and the captain of the boat was frustrated and he was trying everything with in his pr to save his wealth and his life but nothing worked so madvacarya simply with his hands directed the captain how he could come to the shore safely and with the direction of his hands ther sotrm also stopped so this merchant was very pleased and he told MC I will give any gift u like I have many valuable goods oin this boatr take any..MC said I am a sanyasi wht do I need this things for. He insisted give me something. M said oh u r coming from dwarak perhaps u have some gopichandanm. Gopichandan is the clay tht we put this marlk on the forehead the tilak. He just wanted a little of tht. Because gopichandan the best source for gopich is dwaraka. Now Iut it was just so happendila tht the nboat was not properly balnced wen it was leaving dwaraka therefore this merchant put this big bog block of gopichandas on the boat just as a wt to just keep the boat properly balanced. So they brought the clay down the boat and right when they placed it to the gnd it broke open and as it broke open there was a beautiful deity of LK. Thjis deity of K is very sublime. Like no other deoity in all the world. It is a little child in one hand he is holding the rod tht his mother yashoda was using to churn the butter andon the pther hanbd he has a roipe which was used to turn tht rope. There is a story tht was K was living in dwaraka his mother devaki she approached K and she said u know I gave borth to u but I never got to see your childhood I was in proson ttht night tht u took borth ur father on ur order took u across river jamuna to golkul and put u iunder the care of N and Y. and N and Y are so fortunate to see all your childhood and baby padstimes. And I was not allowed to see u again untlll ur grown up. My dear childplease be merciful. Let me just see u one tiume tuhe form when u r a baby. And at tht time K appeared as Makhan chor, the b utter thief. Ah and when he appeared he appeared just the way mother yahoda would catch him redhanded. Mother yashoda would bne churning the butter with thew stick and with the rope like this…u know how they do in the villages and when she would go to do some other duties K would go to steal the butter and sometimes mother Y would come back and he would have butter all over him and he wud have rope in one hand and turning stick in the pther. So devaki wanted to get the bectar tht mother Y was receiving. So K appreaed to her in thth beautiful form. But it so hjust jaüüend tht K wife fort and foremost wife rukmini happened to walks at tht time and she saw the beautiful bay form and fell in love with him. And she said K I want to worship you in tht form because in dwaraka K was King. K I know I love u as king but personally I want ot worship ur form as makhna chor baby. So whtr K did is he took tht form again and viswakarma came and carved exactly the beauty of tht form,. And tht was Mother rukminis personal deity worshiped with her heart ans soul woith privay in her palace of dwaraka. But of course we know tht at the time of dissolution of yadu dynasty tht incomprehensive but sublime pastiume the whole of dwaraka went in to the sea and there fore tht murty went in to the gnd for many many yrs and when they were digging for the Gopichandan tp put the weight on the boat they dug and the murty was in the clay. And he appeared by his sublime mercy to Srila Madvacarya. This is the pastime of the Lord. So MA deceided to install the deity in the town of udipi. Next to the beautiful temple of chandramaleshwar which is an ancient ancient shiva temple where he did his worship. Shiva whoi is the greatest of all dev of K tht is worshipped thr. So 30 men attempted to lift this deity but they could not do it. It was so heay. Struggling straining they cud not do it. So then Madvacarya single handedly lifted the murty and bgenan to walk. And as he was walking from thth beach oin the bank of the sea to the town of udipoi he began to sing he has such a beautiful and melidiuous voice so full of devotion and as he was singing he composed beautiful beautiful prayers in glorification of the form of K. and today the followers of MA
Regularly recite with great devotion these prayers to Sri K. Tht were composed by their param param guru Srila Madva. Ofcourse if u go to udipi u will find out tht there were actually two lumps og gopi chandanda and from the other one there came the beautiful for oof Balaram in his childhood feature and MA began to carry him as well. But at one point Balaram deceided tht I want ot stay here so right on the road Balaram indictaed to MAdhva leave me here.So they constructed a temple for him at tht place. Now I will give u some very very interesting info historically the very place on tht beach where madvachara was revealed the beautiful form of K tht was the place where christofewr columbis forst arrived in India, u heard of CC he is the man who is famous for discovering amewricaö u know how he discovered America wht he did was he took a trip to India hois booat arrived in udipi on the very beach 1492 was how many yrs ago?..abt 500 yrs ago. So he came abt 250 yrs after madva, but tht place was already a sacred place for the deity of K being worshipped by everyone and balaram as well. He arrived thr he obviously must have been had darshan with K every one aelse was going thr must habve gotten the blessings of K in tht holy place and coming to the holy place u can get the blessings of the murti thr correct and he went back to spain and deceided I want to goback to India because all the wealth of the world is thr but I think
Thr is a shortcut I think I should across the atlantik the world is round weveryone said no no the world is flat u will fall off no no this os ashort cut to India so after getting the blessings of udipi K in this holy place he began to travel across the atlantic and he came to this beautiful country. And he thought tht it was India and he met some people and they called Indians but actually izt iwas a new place it was later to be called America. So America was discovered with the blessings of Sri K. And simiölarly SP deceided of all places in the world the most imp to spreac KC is America so he also took boat lile CC to rediscover America spiritually. Columbvus discivered it materially. Of yourse American Indians will not agree bit Europeans will agree. But SP went by boat to discover it. CC came frm India ultimately and went through yr up to America SP also left from eat coast to India throughj euporpe to America to discover it spiritually. So Srila Madva carya in the service f Sri K he is very very powerful in establishing bhakti the realization of god is a person., and the mayavadis those who approach K in his impersonal aspect of Brahman he was very disturbed because MA is teaching woth so full of attachment and so full of live and undisputable philosophy and they were threatened, They tried in som many ways to discredit him and defeat hjim but as we kjnow the more u try to disturn or defeat the great dsould the more the K empowers them to spopread their divine mission in all directions, when they tried to stop jesus by killing him in the process chhristianty spporead and the jesuses potency was more predomninat in the heats than ever before. When hiranyakas tried to destroy prahlad prahlad became more infinitely more empowered tro preach to the persecution he was undergoing. So similatryl when they went to put obstacles before madhva the result was tht all of India brought their focus point to his sublime teachings and he brought inneumerable people to the feet of Sri K. It is described when he was 809 yrs ilod he was in udidpi and he was givning a lecture from the taittreya Upanishad and as heas speaking the glories of Sri K his body dissappeared he was wearing chadar and dhoti and the chaddaer and dhoti just fell to the gnd wher he was siutting tht place is there today. the place where he dissapp from this world. Just before leaving he instructed his followers tht when I leave this world my body will go back to badroikaasjhram tht is where my place and I wqill be thr for the rest of this age in the presence of my guru maharaj dev yasa dev. If u want to worship (no audio). Because of his graet knowledge in dev bhaktivedanta bhakti siddhanta how he established the essence of pure unalloyes lord K. For this reason the SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD Sri Krishna CMP accepoted initiation and accepted instructruions from the disciplic succesiion coming from srila madvacarya. And CMP instructed six gos sri rup and sri sanatana ..he instructed jiva, javiraj goswami..and then bhattacaryas in are such great souls Srininvas NDT sri BVD srila VCT..Jagannath das babaji whjo instructed BVT whjo instructed the great ascetic Srila GKD babaji who is divine celebrated GM of om Vishnu pad Sri BSST who is the lofe and soul of our beloved GM om Vishnupad paramhamsa Sila AC BVSP. We r all fortzunate today tht we are always eager to hear about the transcental knowledge of pure devotion to Sri K. On this most holy day of the app and diss app of our holy acaryas it is a great tribulation for your entusiam to serive to our Guru dev and K. To hear to chant and remember the glories which they left behind by the great acaryas.
Hare Krsna..Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare rama Rama rama hare hare.
I would like to thank all you. Tonight if u all come to our center we will discuss briefly about the subject matter of the teachings and his life of Srila Ramanuja charya.
