The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami

At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months,  Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga  "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

RadhanathMaharaj.net gives us a complete collection of the teaching of Radhanath Swami. Teachings consists of Transcriptions of lectures delivered by Radhanath Swami at various places. This website is to inspire the followers of Radhanath Swami to practice the philosophy of Vaishanavism.

Radhanath Swami On Controlling The Senses

I specially respect HH Nitya Advita Swami Maharaj one of the disciples of His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada…., I specially welcome Sri Jaganath das Prabhu great disciples HH Sri Narayan Maharaj his one of the dearest friend of our Spritiual Master from the glories of Vrindavan of Navadvipam Dham ..and I would like to offer my great respects to the lotus feet of all you Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami in the Caitanya Charitamrta again and again offers his respectful obeisances to all those who took time to hear the divine sound vibration of his words, in fact Kaviraj Goswami explains in this great great literature Caitnya Cheritamrta he has 2.22 to his writing for his own purification praying for the blessings those are hearing from him and he offers his obeisances to all the devotees of the lord not only the great Pramahamas but even those who are just beginning or just coming to the path of the Bhakti, considering their feet to be worship able so it is true that in the path of Krishna Consciousness the only aspiration is to be Servant of the Servant of the Servant in fact in the material concept of life we are very anxious to approach people who are in big position we want to go to the top as fast as we can whether its in politics or business or whatever position, but in the spiritual life if we have this mentality we will always remain on the bottom, because as Krishna explains to the Uddavah in the Bhagavatm.
‘ 4.05Mad Bhakta puja aviduika ‘
“ One who considers himself to be my devotee is not truly my devotee, One who considers himself to be of my devotee he is dear to me”.
And Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu he is Lord Sri Krishna himself has given us this instruction
Gopi baratha kamalayur Dasu Dasanu das 4. 35
My aspiration is only to be the servant of the servant of the servant of the Supereme Lord Sri Krishna who is the master and enjoyer of the Gopis, so Kaviraj GoSwami who is considered by the great Acharyas to be on the topmost level of the Spiritual Consciousness is manifesting what type of qualities such a person has, is always aspiring to show respects and to worship in the mood of servitude to those who are in the lowest position. Such a person a real sadhu he doesn’t put himself in upper position thinking 4 people up but rather 5.33, ………..he put himself in a lower position to push 4 people up above what he is …5.43
That is humility, that is the difference bet Spiritual Consciousness and Material Consciousness, Material Consciousness is we want to go to the top and stay there, and keep every one else down there and Spiritual Consciousness we want go to the bottom and push every one else to the top, in the eyes of the GOD that is the highest postion, this is the world where people are always subject to the great fears, because of the infinite certainties that can come upon us at any moment
“Padam Padam yet dhiva……”

People are so foolish they put their goals and they strive with such determination, perform such great sacrifices for what?, the things that are so flickering and temporary that any moment there is the danger of loosing everything that we dedicated our lives that we attain, therefore in Bhagavatam it says an intelligent person he makes his goal the Kingdom of GOD, he makes his goal and life only the pleasure of Krishna, he never puts much value in any of these things in the world.
The great Vaishnava poet Govinda das he has prayed
“Yetha Yavan Putr prijan…”
Just see I have spent my whole life for, all the temporary things of this world My wealth, My Youth, My family members, My prestige in society, they are all of the same significance as a drop of water that appears on a lotus leaf, it appears for some time and inevitably at the least expected moment it is gone, that is the nature of all these things and my whole life I dedicated to this and what do I have left Govind das says now that I am an old man and all I left is heart full of loneliness and frustration
Therefore My dear Mind “ Bhajahuremana Srinandanadhana Abhay Charan Aravinda re….”
Please my mind engage yourself in the worship of the lotus feet of Sri Hari, Sri Nadha Nadhana because then we becomes fearless other wise this is the world of fear,
And where there is fear there can be no peace, there can be no joy, Therefore Srila Rupa Goswami has said whatever price you have to pay for Krishna do not hesitate, you will not be the looser, there is one great Vaishnava poet he has said the my mind and my senses they are such cruel heartless masters, they want my entire life, I have surrendered submissively to server them through trials, tribulations I remain faithful in their service and they never gave me any fulfillment not only was I never satisfied not only that they never give me what they promised but although I spent my whole life now I am old and tired and I want to retire and they will not allow it, they are still demanding more, is this the type of master you want to dedicate your life to, who take everything, never give you what you expect whole life…11.38 .in the service when you are old when you want to give up, they are still demanding more, this is the condition, practically everyone in this world.
In the Sastra it is sadi “ Pa, PPa , Bha, Bhha, Ma…12:03-08”
‘Paa’ means we work so hard just to serve the mind and the senses
‘Baa’ means we work so hard, we foam at the mouth like a foolish ass
‘vaa’ means what do we get out of it simply frustration and anxiety because of
whatever we obtain is never enough and next is
‘Bhaa’ means Bhayam, fear whatever little we have we are always afraid of loosing and ultimately.
‘maa’ Mrtya or death

Apavargama means liberation when is become free from ‘ Paa, Baa, Vaa, BhaaMaa ‘ therefore apavargama , but how to do this, it is such in born tendency, it is so strong, Krishna says in Gita “Yatato Yat Kaunteya…13.29” that the senses are so strong and impetus that even a man of discrimination , who is trying to control them is carried away “…..13.47 “ the senses it is described in Gita, just like a boat on an ocean is carried away by a strong wind even one of the senses in which the mind focuses can carry away a mans intelligence “Dayatho visyan ….14.17” story of our lives .
First we contemplate the objects of the senses, we see them come before our eyes or ears or tongue or flesh and we contemplate how we want to enjoy , from that contemplation Kama, burning passion of desire arises in the burning passion of desire or lust, Krishna explains in the Gita it is like a burning fire the more you feed it the more out rageous, therefore it is never fulfilled and due to unfilled passionate desires or lust anger arises, we cannot tolerate some one getting between us in our plans for our sense gratification from that anger you know what happens when you become angry your memory is bewildered you act in ways that you would have never dreamed you offend one you love from such bewilderment of memory the intelligence is lost and then we commit sinful abominable activities and fall down into the material pool, therefore Krishna explains “ tama sarvani…16.23” one must restrain the senses in fixed consciousness on Krishna, he cannot simply restrain the senses “ Ananda Mayo ….16.41”, the nature of the consciousness, the Jiva atma it is pleasure seeking, it must have pleasure, its very inherent nature is Sat Cit Ananda, it cannot live without ananda, the impersonalist school of philosophers after so much frustration, trying to enjoy this world and senses they become frustrated and they want to attain the Sat condition of life, the eternal condition, everything is miserable in this world because it is temporary “ Dhukalyam Ashashvatam simply release from the miserable condition due to material dualities and attachment to them give no pleasure the consciousness within the heart of every living being is seeking Ananda bliss, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu explained “Anaandam Bhudivardanam Pratipadam puranamrutha svadhanam ….18:07” bliss pleasure everyone seeking in the line…….18:10 fixing their Consciousness on Krishna and how easy it is to put our consciousness on Krishna by the mercy of Sri Mahaprabhu Lord Caitanya simply by calling out His holy names “ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare “ by filling our mind, by filling our senses with the pleasurable experience of Nama Sanskirtan we achieve the fulfillment of all our hearts eternal desire prema Bhakti ..19.11love of Krishna ,
just like this evening we have seen this ladies and gentlemen who have come tonight they are not Sanyasis they are not Bramhacharis, there is one Sanyasi and one Bramhachari and perhaps seventy or hundred family people with job, with wife with children with responsibilities things we were never dream of how possibly can somebody become GOD consciousness he had a wife, she has a husband 19:50 and children and guests and home and duties to the government and taxes in all these comparative conditions that come before us day by day what type of spiritual life can such a person live, but we have seen tonight that all such people they are coming together, they are rising there arms they have forgotten all the problems of the material life they are calling out the holy name in congregation “ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare “ and factually they gain entrance in the spiritual world, Krishna says to Naradha , what is that verse ..I am not in Vaikunta, I am not in the place where Jnanis are studying the sastra I am not in that place where Yogis are performing there Tapasya and penance “ 21:19….” Wherever my devotees come together and chant my and chant my holy name I am there but to night Krishna is here, there are many slokas that describe Krishna never takes one step out of Vrindavan “…Govindam Adi purusam …21:51” Govindam never leaves Vrindavan not even one step and Krishna says wherever my devotees are chanting my name I am there what is that mean wherever we sincerely come together to glorify the name of the Krishna that place becomes Vrindavan that is the spiritual world “Golokera Premadhana Harinama Sankirtan” Naratoma Das Takur describe that the holy name of Krishna has descended from the spiritual sky from Goloka Vrindavan “…….22:42” and why has the holy name has descended from Goloka Vrindavan to this world simply to deliver the most fallen anybody simply opens there heart and hears to chant the holy names sincerely that is the only qualification required to attain the supreme perfection of life because by sincerely chanting the holy name the natural desire in our heart is surrendered to Krishna is awaken in that surrender the manifestation of love and Krishna reciprocates according to our love “ Ye Yada mam prapadyenthey …23:41” Bhakti Vinoda Takhur has prayed “ Jive thoko vane thoko …23:55” …..whether you are sanyasi living in the forest or in some holy place simply chant the name of the Krishna, sincerely “sukhe Duhke Bhulo Nakho..” and all happiness and distress of this material world will be vanquished, we experience the complete joy of spiritual consciousness and that is the goal of life and that must be the first and topmost priority in every endeavor in our life there is story in the Srimad Bhagavatam about a Brahman he was living in a attractive land called avanti desh and this Brahman is very greedy for money and very hungry for power by all kinds of means wherever is necessary he became very wealthy and he became very influential and in the process such a person makes so many friends not a real friends they are superficial friends who are like you simply want to exploit you and use what you are and what you have so by the inconceivable and uncertain arrangements of providence he lost everything his agricultural fields were burned thieves came and plundered his wealth he was left literally with nothing from his wife and children they found nothing really good in his man except what he was providing so they felt what is the future staying with this failure of a man use of his wife and children walked out they left then he turned to his friend ..27:06 our friend what will society think of us if we associate with a failure like you with nothing like you his friend walked out on him he was alone and penny less and his heart with full of greatest pain of suffering and loneliness and simply laid on the ground and cried and what else he could do he had no alternative to lay on the ground and cry and he was crying and crying and feeling so shy for himself with no one to turn to something awaken within his heart what I have done how I have wasted my life “ Kamal tala Jala Jivana Tala Mala I have spent my whole life simply for a peral of water on the leaf of a lotus and all these little pearls left away it cannot hold on to them, …28:17
In this condition he understood that he has only one true friend that is Krishna and turn to Krishna ..he surrendered to Krishna and in that condition his self felt ecstatic joy in fact he became the wealthiest of all men real wealth is the treasure of the internal realization of GODHEAD for a person who has good intelligence he sees wealth in a person of that person as faith in GOD, has humility and devotion that person is the richest man on earth and a person who does not have humble devotion and faith in GOD that person is poverty stricken whatever situation he is
I often tell the example of one of the biggest greatest television stars in all of the America he was number one for six years in a row .29:48.I happened to meet him in Bankok not even in Bankok 6 hours away in a rice paddy happened to meet this man I am a poor sanyasi, I have no place to get back he happened Mercedes Benz he pick me up we were talking 30:15…he had most beautiful cars, he has beautiful house a mansion in a Beverly hills, California, he was having affairs with the …30:29 beautiful women all over the world and he was so famous and he was so successful, he was so popular and he was so miserable he said my life is an empty shell, every big person I know, I know all of them they are all like me, they put on a show that they are blissful, they are happy, they are successful, but they have to take sleeping pills, intoxications and everything else just to forget the total hallow empty shell that is within that’s all he said I am suffering I am in pain I don’t want be with these people anymore I just want a simple life with some pleasure with some meaning he said may I should sell everything and give everything in charity and work in rice paddy some where these people look like they have little contegnous [ 31:33] he said please tell me without GOD everything in life is futile they put us show [31:50], there is no substance like the husk of rice with nothing inside that is human society simply engrossing our mind and our senses with all the superficialities of this world and even in the name of spiritual life with such a strong tendencies they take the religion and surrender to a Guru and what is there aspiration recognition, higher position in the spiritual higher Archie, power, influence, facilities all these superficialities that you accept and engross in a reason…33:02, therefore Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu he taught us Gopi bara yor..Dasa anu das just try to become the humble servant , therefore KG is teaching us just become the humble servant don’t try to be a master, don’t try to be enjoyer let Krishna enjoy you, that is the eternal aspiration of the soul, simply allow Krishna to enjoy us and how it is so simple associate with those who are true and genuine devotees of the lord learn how to live a GOD centered life and first and foremost living a GOD centered life regularly and sincerely and in the association of the saintly person chant the holy name “ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare “.
See the name of Krishna, spiritual world manifests within our own heart .what is the purpose of the family life? what is the purpose of the Sanyasi life, they are both essential and invaluable necessities to the society if they are centered in service to Krishna, if they are not, however philanthropic, however pious?, however successful? Like a drop of water on a lotus leaf , therefore invest your time, invest your energy in that which is eternal “Dhurlabha manava Janama …” that is the rare gift of the human life ..thank you very much.
Is there any questions
Question and Answer
1. There is a question of Purification and realization
A father or a mother , a Guru, a teacher “…………36:23” the first and foremost responsibility is to lead his / her dependants in such a way that person never takes a birth again in this material world , he can understand Krishna, so to understand everything is the property of GOD and whatever we are in association with is the property of GOD it is not ours to enjoy, it is under our care by the mercy of the GOD, so we are servant of GOD accepting the position of GOD he must also accept the position of the servant of all those things that GOD grant you ..37:25..Srila Bhakti Siddantaha Saraswathi Takhur he was a great Acharya so many thousands of disciples when here on his Vayasa puja day he was sitting on a very high eleveated beatuitful vyasa asan and so many thousands of people were offering and praising and in the end he spoke some of you might be thinking what am I doing here accepting all these worship, but in truth that I am not accepting any of these things to myself , I am only accepting for only one purpose alone as a humble servant to all of these people because they require to offer to God and His devotees it is my service to them to accept on behalf of GOD what they are giving and then he said I accept My Guru Maharaj and Krishna has sent all you to serve by assisting you for your spiritual welfare, you are all the property of my Guru Maharaj of a parent of a child, it is not our child, nothing is ours, this child belongs to GOD, and GOD has so kindly and mercifully allow to care of this child on his behalf are you the master of the child or servant of the child, it is your duty to humbly chastise that child as an act of service to bring him close to the GOD…39.40 this is the consciousness of the reality thinking that we are the master, we are the controller, we are the enjoyer, that is illusion, that means we have forgotten our relationship with GOD, however nice we do our duty, Krishna says in the Gita .40:25.”” all your work is nothing but bondage, if it is not done as a sacrifice to the supreme personality of Godhead, in India there is a popular idea that work is worship, according to Gita work that is done as a sacrifice as an offering of love to Krishna is worship any other work that you do, however many people that you do not hurt, its all bondage that is the opinion, if I do my job and don’t hurt anybody that is Dharma, but it is not Sanathana Dharma, Sanathana Dharma means “ Yat Karochi..41:12” Sanathana Dharma is all that you do, all that you eat, all that you offer and give away do as an offering to me, Krishna says and this work is worship just like we have dharma, it is maya Dharma, it is not Sanathana Dharma, it is Dhukalayam Ashvashavatam dharma, it is the occupational duties of one who wants to suffer, because they are all meant for bondage, Rajo Guna, Tamo guna, Sattva Guna, they are always competing in our lives “ Tri Gunya Vishya veda…42:04” Krishna says raise above all these modes, be conscious of me with this realization, with this purification that comes through the associating with Sadhus and chanting the holy names we learned the art of being Servant of servant of servant in every situation of life.
Q2.
“….Apurya manam 43:15”.. this is in the second chapter, Describe that however many rivers enter into the ocean, the ocean is never disturbed during the dry season very little water comes from the river into the ocean, does the ocean dry up, the ocean doesn’t move even an inch and during the monsoon rainy season sometimes the river becomes several miles wide and the billions of liters of water pouring in every minute, does the ocean over flood, during the rainy season, ocean doesn’t move an inch, why? Because the Ocean is pour and so deep in itself it is not disturbed by the external forces coming in, but a puddle of water, a puddle of water or a small reservoir we have seen in India so many especially in Maharastra reservoir of water during the dry season it becomes completely dried up cannot even get a one drop out of it and during the rainy season it floods over and everything is ever rounded is completely dis ray 44:58..if you full within yourself none of the external forces that come through your senses disturb you, but you are empty in yourself, you are completely affected by everything that comes in through your senses
How to tolerate Anger? How to tolerate Lust? How to tolerate envy? How to tolerate pride and greed and illusion? In the process of Sadhana? We have to some how or other restrain our emotions, but at the same time we have to fix our consciousness on Krishna, through the process of purification, the joy and the peace of Krishna within is so deep, so vast, so wide, whatever situation comes into our lives it doesn’t even ..45:59 us, its like a lotus flower grows eve in the dirtiest part of water, bu the lotus flower is un touched by all the dirt and pollution..why?
Rather than connecting our mind to senses tot the sense objects, we must connect our minds to Krishna and the easiest way is to chant His name “ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare “.
47:00 you have a very large army I believe, how many soldiers are in your military forces? 1.2 million , what do they do? That they sit home watch television and when the war starts they just put on there uniforms and fight if they do that .47:45 .slaughtered therefore in every country in the world practically there are armies, military forces and day and night, they train their soldiers, so when the battle takes place, they are ready, they are ready for the enemy, so sadhana is the trainin, Sadhana means to regularly read sastra, regularly associate with devotees of the lord sadhus, to regularly chant the Holy name of the lord to regularly follow the principles, No illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling, no meat eating, this gives us the strength and in our day to day life when Maya attacks we are ready, other she catches us off guard and defeats us, we must constantly practice the principles of sadhana bhakti to remain strong and prepared and ready for any onslaught of maya ? what is that strength? It is not our strength, it is Krishna’s strength, In the path of Bhakti sadhana simply means, every day taking shelter of Krishna, when we are chanting the name and crying out taking the shelter of Krishna, when we are reading the satras and opening our hearts taking shelter of his words, when we are coming in the association of the devotees we are submissively opening our hearts and submissively taking shelter of there divine company through the practice no matter how hard maya strives at that moment, we humbly take shelter of Krishna, then we become transcendental and victorious by the grace of GOD, when dushyasana was pulling the saree of a drupati she was helpless, what was her strength she cried out for Krishna’s strength entered, our strength is crying out for Krishna, Arjuna was told to fight, but Krishna told during the fight in your consciousness you should always be remembering me worshiping me, crying out for me, that was his victory, his victory was not with the Gandiva bow, externally that appears that way, the real victory of Arjuna was internally in his heart, he was constantly taking shelter of Krishna, there was no enemy could defeat such a devotee, pepare yourself because you are in the middle of the battle, this material world is battle field, enemy 50:50..all around and our ..are always there ready to strike, it is mayas abode, we must be very prepared GOD helps those who are pure souls , Hare Krishna!
