Yet despite being equally kind to everyone , he has graciously come before me while I am ending my life for I am his unflinching servitor

Purport (by his divine grace AC bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad) – the surepere lord, the absolute personality of godhead, Sri Krsna , although equal to every one is still more inclined to his unflinching devotees who has completely surrendered and knows no one else as his protector and master , having unflinching faith in the supreme lord as ones protector , friend and master is the natural condition of eternal life . Living entity is so made by the will of the almighty, that he is most happy when placing himself in a condition of absolute dependence the opposite tendency is a cause of falldown , the living entity has this tendency of falling down , IDENTING misidentifying himself as fully independent to lord it over the material world . the root cause of all trouble is there in false egotism , one must === the lord in all circumstances , the appearance of lord krsna at the deathbed of bhismadevji is due to his being unflinching devotee of the lord . Arjuna had some bodily relations with krsna , because the lord happened to be his maternal cousin but Bhisma had no such bodily relation , therefore the cause of attraction was due to the intimate relation of the soul , yet because the relation of the body very pleasing == natural , lord is more pleased when he is addressed as son of maharaj nanda son of Yasoda , the lover of radharaani , --- of bodily relation of the lord is another feature of loving service with the lord , bhismadev is conscious of this sweetness of transcendental humor & therefore he likes to address lord as Vijayasakhi / parthsakhi etc exactly like nandnandana or yasoda nandana , the best way to establish our relationship in transcendental sweetness is to approach him through his recognized devotee . one should not try to establish relation directly , there must be a medium which is transpareant & confident to lead us to the right path

This is a prayer being offered to lord sri krsna by srila bhismadev who is laying on bed of arrows on the battlefield of Kurukshetra , Bhismadev was given the benediction by his father maharaj santanu , that he would never have to die unless he choose to do so by his own will . on that great battle which was fought in Kurukshtra , the pandavas who were led by lord Krsna himself , they could understand that it was impossible to be victorious as long as bhisma was fighting so with great humility and devotion , they approached their beloved grandfather in the night in his tent at the camp of the kurus and they begged him with tears of love in their eyes , can you possibly instruct us , how we can kill you ? Because although we love you more than we love our own lives , it is the will of lord krsna that we win this war and there is no other way , if we do not kill you , we === defeat = . upon hearing these words bhisma , his face become illuminated as he began to smile with great joy .
In essence , what he wanted to tell pandavas , as much as you want to win this war for krsna , I want to lose this war & die for krsna . They were both serving krsna with equal, unalloyed , unflinching devotion as his servants . but krsna had purpose for arjuna winning & for bhisma losing , = people say that bhisma fought on the other side , the side of immorality , irreligion, the side against god . According to duryodhana , because he was living in duryodhana’s palace and because he was being fed & maintained by the kurus , therefore it was moral obligation to do so . from very superficial & external point of view that is true . but bhismadev is 1 of the 12 mahajans , that means he has completely surrendered soul who understand the essence of truth SARVA DHARMAN PARITYAJYA ------------------- , the truth is that we should have abandoned whatever ideas of religion and surrender to the will of lord krsna , it is said MAHAJANO YE ---------------------- that one can only understand the truth if one hears and follows the footsteps of great mahajans and bhisma is one of those mahajans so do we think that he would go against krsna for a mundane principle of obligation , externally he did not mind if people accused him of this being paid of bribe , the fact was he knew the heart of krsna , he knew quiet well that krsna wanted him to fight on the other side & krsna wanted him killed , why ? why krsna want his pure devotee killed ? Krsna says in Gita kounteya prati janemi -------------------- , krsna says I always protect my devotees, have no fear . so here is the greatest of the devotees , why krsna wants him killed when he is promising to protect them , because when krsna promises his protection he does not mean to this physical body , temporarily he may , but ultimately in the form of time krsna kills everyones material body who ever you , whether you are paramhans mahabhagwat or whether you are an atheist . in the form of almighty time – kaalarupa , krsna kills everyone , so what does it mean when he says – he protect his devotees , it means he protects his soul from the illusion of maya , he give the soul of that devotee eternal life , because does not see on bodily concept , krsna sees with divine vision as we are meant to see so therefore , krsna wanted to establish accoriding to == that even the greatest or all powerful man on earth , if they are not on the side of the lord and his devotees , they will be destroyed ----11:00 mins

Does not matter how powerful you are , does not matter how learned you are , bhisma was trained in the art of fighting by Parashuram, who is an incarnation of godhead himself . in earlier year of his life when he was young man, he actually had a battle with with his own guru parashuram and parashuram could not defeat him , he was equal to the almighty – avatar in his strength therefore no one could defeat him and he was trained in the science of the Vedas by brihaspati and he had equal intellect to brihaspati , therefore the most intelligent plus most powerful plus he had a boon that he could not be killed , he had everything going his way materially but krsna wanted to show whatever you have going your way materially , if you are not on the side of my devotee , you will be vanquished in the end & bhisma in order to assist krsna by teaching this lesson to all the world , he chose to fight on the opposite side, such a sense of surrender , how many people understand him ?

Bhisma obviously , he was very learned man , he has treamendous intutuion inside into past, present & future , he knew that majority of mankind would misunderstand him , criticize him for millenniums to come for fighting on the side of duryodhana . But he did not mind if this is what it takes to serve my lord to help him in his mission , this is my greatest joy & my most wonderful blessing of life
So when the pandavas ask bhisma , how can we kill you ? he was just so happy , I was just waiting for you to ask , thank you very much , this is the way --------------------- & then Arjuna you pierce me with your arrows from head to toe , don’t leave any space & bhisma came on the battle field , & he started fighting with such heroism that he was demolishing & diminishing everyone but in heart he was very joyful , because he knew today is a day he was waiting for , for so long . So as arjuna was shooting his arrows , because he had so much love for bhisma , he could not shoot them very hard so bhisma was telling him you must shoot harder , you must pierce me with all of your might , because his body was like a steel and as Arjuna was shooting with all of his might tears coming from his eyes , bhisma was relishing the arrows going through him & then he laid there on the battlefield of kurukshetra , from arrows from neck to his feet , Arjuna would not shoot at his base -- & if you go to kurukshetra that very spot , it is called bhismakund , that very place where bhisma was laying down is still there , it was there that whole battle stopped , can you imagine the respect --- of this personality ? that there are millions of warrior fighting and when he felled to the ground , he was so important & so loved by everyone & all sides that the whole war stopped that day and everyone mourned for bhisma & came to offer their respect for him , duryodhana came with beautiful silk pillow to put under his head to give balance , -- on the battlefield we can not expect any luxury , then Arjuna shot arrows under his head into the ground & bhisma was very happy & then arjuna , --- arrow in the ground , special arrow which brought the river ganges to come into the mouth of bhismadev so that place is there today , Bhismakund , the place where Arjuna shot the arrow in the ground to create the ganges , there is a – at that place , which explains that bhisma laid there for 6 full months , his body pierced , you could not finger between any 2 arrows , but he waited , he could have died anytime he wanted , most people when they are in that situation , they wanted to put out of pain , they want some pain killers as such pain is worse than death but he just laid there & tolerated , because he knew with faith in his heart that krsna will soon to come & krsna who knows everyones heart & bhisma who knows , krsna knows everyones heart , krsna came with maharaj Yudhishtir for one purpose only to glorify this great devotee , to glorify his wisdom , to glorify his devotion & to fulfill his inner most desire so bhisma is here offering his prayers to the lord that although you my lord equally kind to everyone , you have graciously come before me while I am ending my life for I am -- unflinching servitor.

Althogh bhisma knew he was on wrong side , even bhisma during the battle attacked Krsna , he was shooting him with arrows & forces krsna to break his own promise , krsna vowed - I will not fight in this battle . He gave choice to duryodhana & arjuna , 1 part I will give --- of my soldiers or whole army , other side will be me but I vow I will not raise a weapon & I will not fight so duryodhana was thinking if you are not going to fight , what do I need you ? I will take your armies , this was his faith , his faith was based on material calculation . but Arjuna was very happy , what do I need all these armies if I have krsna I am sure to succeed , in life or death if I have krsna on my side , my life is perfect so this is the difference between material consciousness & spiritual consciousness , in material consciousness we make so many material consideration in our life , we think if I can have this & I can have that ------ , I can acquire this and I can acquire something else , if I can do this , then I will be succe ssful .
But a devotee does not calculate on those terms , a devotee understands one thing alone that if I have krsna on my side if krsna is pleased with me , I don’t need anything else … duryodhana was the emperor of the whole world he had everything , beautiful palace , beautiful family , power , prestige, respect , ability , was he happy ?
He was constantly fearful , he was constantly being tortured by – of envy burning in his heart , what’s the use of having everything ? if you are miserable . The pandavas although they are vanished to the forest , externally , superficially , they were uphappy that they could not do their service the way they wanted but ultimately they were in a joyful state , Because they knew they had krsna , because they knew they were living in harmony with Krsna . so Duryadhana calculated if I have these armies who could defeat me with Krsna’s soldiers ? And Arjuna was thinking if I have Krsna what difference anything will make win or lose . but Krsna made this vow , I will not fight and I will not raise a weapon , anyways during the battle , krsna played a trick on bhisma and bhisma knew the heart of krsna . In the sense krsna reveals his will to his pure devotees , there fore the bhisma knew that he wanted to show the another example on the battlefield of kurukshetra , how dear is his devotee to him ? so he was going to be an instrument and in the service of krsna , for the pleasure of krsna , to fulfill the mission of krsna , bhisma vowed that today I will force krsna to break his vow . Because you see , just at the beginning of this battle , krsna said kounteya -------------- , he say Arjuna , you declare it boldly , that I will protect my devotee so bhisma wanted to put krsna in a situation whether he had to break his devotee’s vow or his vow . So bhisma attacked Arjuna , he utterly defeated Arjuna , Arjuna was laying on the ground and bhisma was coming to kill him , he was helpless , he was finished and when krsna saw this he picked a wheel of a chariot (parthsarathi) and he came running at bhisma , bhisma put arrows in his body, but krsna came at him with a such a fury and bhisma saw this he was very happy . he just put down his weapon and bowed down at the lotus feet of krsna – if you want you can kill me now my lord . I am yours , he surrendered and of course krsna just went back to Arjuna to take care of his devotee so here , bhisma was fighting on the wrong side he forced krsna to break his vow & yet bhisma is saying , krsna is so kind , krsna is so gracious , although I have done all this still he has come such a long distance to come before me as I am dying , why ? because may be no one else know but he knows that I am his unflinching servitor . One great lesson we can learn from this example is this , we can please some of the people some of the time but we can not please all the people all the time or you can never fool krsna . Krsna is the knower of everything , sarvasya ---- ======== Krsna says I know everyone in full , I know all your desires , all your aspirations , all your actions , past , present & future so therefore a devotee must learn , how to be honest before krsna , how to live in such a way that we are conscious that Krsna is the witness of everything we say , everything we do & everything we think that is Krsna consciousness . We can cheat others but in the end it is just a matter of us & Krsna . We can fool all world , == from world but the lord in our heart knows all so therefore this is Krsna consciousness . To have this consciousness that Krsna is everywhere he is the witness of everything . To be honest & faithful to Krsna in every moment of our life . That is the real meaning of humility . To recognize that we are completely dependant on the mercy of krsna & krsna reveals himself according to how we approach him . There is the example in the Ramayan where Hanumanji when he was told by sugreeva that Ram & Lakshman were at the PUMPI sarovar , at that time they didn’t knew who they were , they thought may be they are messengers of bali , coming to kill us so sugreeva sent Hanumanji to go & you disguise yourself & you enquire who they are , so hanuman by his mystic power , he disguise himself as Brahman & he came before the two brothers . But when he came before them , he could not understand who they were , but he just felt such an attraction , such a love , such a faith in these 2 people , when they asked who are you ? he said I am Hanuman (laugh), he could not lie to them & he revealed his original form , then he said who are you ? then Laxman said this is ram , son of dashrath & I am laxman his brother and hanuman, this is worshipable lord throughtout his life. finally he is getting darshan of them , he felled down at his lotus feet , he got up & said , what an offence ? I worshiped you all my life , why I could not recognize you ? and Ram said because you are disguising yourdself from me therefore I disguise myself from you , when you revealed who you were to me I revealed who I was to you ye yathaa mam prapadyante --- ----------------- if we are honest with Krsna , krsna is honest with us , we try to cheat krsna , krsna will cheat us , if we try to conceal anything , krsna will conceal himself from us , this is Krsna consciousness understanding. Therefore Rupgoswami explains us that one of the principles of loving exchange between devotees is to reveal ones mind honestly and confidence and to be willing to here another person reveal his or her mind in confidence and honesty , because the devotee is the representative of god , if we are honest with the devotee , we are honest with krsna and if we are not honest with devotee or the sadhus , the real sadhu , then we are not honest with Krsna , Krsna will cover us --, krsna will hide himself , he will conceal himself , he will cheat us , that is his mercy . So in this way what do we want in life ? do we want something of this world ? and we are willing to beg – still cheat for it ? or do we want the mercy of krsna ? this we have to evaluate , a devotee simply wants the mercy of krsna and here Bhismadev , he knew , may be nobody else understood but Krsna knows my inner most heart , that whatever I did , is to please him and to server him . It was to do him will – in this world , therefore he sat there for 6 months simply waiting , waiting and waiting for Krsna to come and krsna appeared and Bhisma was so grateful how many of you laying in a bed of arrows pierced through the front, through the back , into the ground elevated 100s and 100s and 100s of such arrows , how many of you would be grateful to Krsna , Bhisma was grateful , he was offering his obeisances, Krsna you are so kind you are so merciful , you are allowing me to do this service for you. Now I never wanted to come in this world in the first place, I only remained here in your service as long as you wanted me but I am so fortunate , you are giving me your blessings that I can go back home back to godhead and with these prayers chanting the holy names of Krsna remembering his beautiful pastimes in Vrindavan , remembering his beautiful pastime in Dwaraka, his pastime in battlefield of Kuruksherta , his pastime in Mathura , remembering all these wonderful activities of the lord , chanting the holy names of the lord , looking at the beautiful form of the lord SriKrsna with tears of love flowing from his eyes he offered his life as a sacrifice of love . Krsna I am yours . Bhisma did not die. Bhisma was taken by Srikrsna back home back to godhead , that’s all. For devotee death is welcomed , we try to avoid that as far as possible to perform our service , because after in this world there is so much service to be done , therefore we must try to prolong our life as long as we can not because we like this world but because we like to serve and after all this world is Krsna’s world , this world that world we are attached to wherever we can serve the lord . Srila Prabhupad used to tell this story about the prophet who came to a village and he met four different people , first he met a prince and he gave a blessings to each one of them , he said to the prince , better you live and then he met a bramhacari and then he said better you die and then he met a butcher and then he said better you neither live or die and then he met pure sadhu and he said better you either live or die , when someone asked , can you explain what all these blessings mean ? some of them sound like blessing some of them don’t sound like blessings , can you explain , no they are all blessings , you see this prince he is enjoying anything in life now , he has beautiful young lady , he has a beautiful house , he has a beautiful family , he has beautiful wealth , prestige , everything but because he is so spoiled by all these things , he is living in such disharmony from the will of god , he is engaging in so many sinful activities and when he dies
He is going to have to suffer with hellish existence so better he lives could be happy now and the brahmacharis is living in radha gopinath temple with rats all around and
Cockroaches,he just sleeping on the floor and in little a room with somebody else,he is eating rice and dal just a meniel servant.has no pleasures of sex life or family life everyone wants so much and how come he live without these things he is just a meaniel servant with no prestige whatsoever is just serving his guru day n night he is doing so much tapasya nowbetter he dies because he is guaranteed to go back home back to godhead this crucial world when he dies and the butcher in this life all around his blood and death and the screaming of innocent creatures he is suffering terribly.and at the time of death he is going to have to accept the consequences of everything he is doing now better he neither lives nor dies but the vaisnava the pure devotee what is he doing now he is simply serving krsna simply doing the will of krsna and after he dies what will he do ? The will of Krsna whether he is in this world or in spiritual world makes no difference to him . He is seeing krsna everywhere , He is seeing Krsna’s service everywhere . He is chanting the holy name here , when he dies he will back to godhead and chant the holy name there , what’s the difference ? either he lives or dies makes no difference , they ask their Gurudev what do you expect to get out of this chanting of HARE KRSNA , if we keep chanting HARE KRSNA , in the spiritual world , we will be eternally be glorifying the names of god , we don’t want to attend any platform , then the platform ------- right now . Simply serving the lord and chanting his holy name , we want to do this eternally but we want to do it in pure love so Bhismadev whether he is laying on bed of arrows , on the side of the kurus or whether he is going back home back to godhead . For him it does not matter, He is simply living for the pleasure of krsna, for the service of krsna , this is Krsna consciousness . therefore with this beautiful darshan before him, chanting HIS holy name and remembering his wonderful pastimes bhisma is saying krsna, I am yours . Do what you want with me ? and with that moment krsna took his soul from that body and sent him back to the spiritual world . And everyone around when they saw this , they were struck with wonder . Because through this incident bhisma has tought everyone , for all time to come – how to end their life in perfect harmony with god . Krsna says in Gita yam yam vapi param ----------- that whatever you think at the time of death , that you will attain without fail . those who remember me at the time of death attain me without fail and death is the final exam , it is the culmination of our life . To chant the name of god , to remember the divine form of the lord , to immerse your consciousness in grateful state , receiving the mercy of the lord , this is the goal of human form of life to die in that state . But the fact is you can not die in that state unless you first live in that state and that is what our krsna consciouness movemet is offering to humanity by the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu , teaching us how to live in the state of complete remembrance of Krsna throughout the day , throughout the night . by coming together as we have this afternoon we are practicing yug dharma , we are practicing the recommended process in this age to attend the highest perfection of life . This Yug dharma is to come in the congregation of sincere devotees to hear the glories of the lord and to chant his holy name HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE !

And it is said mahajano yen ------- that one must follow the footsteps of the great mahajans and we can choose and we can select each of these 12 mahajans and see the Krsna has manifested a particular virtue in each and everyone one of them . By which if we follow , we can attain the supreme perfection by always remembering krsna , man mana bhagvad bhakto --------------- and what is the example that we must follow in the footsteps of bhismadev , how to be willing to accept any position in life to please Krsna and how to give up this body in the presence of the lord and in the presence of the holy name

Infact just as Bhisma was witnessing the beautiful form of SriKrsna , Krsna is no less standing before us today in divine form of RADHA GOPINATH and he is noless present everytime we chant his holy name . this is the supreme benediction , this is the supreme blessings and this is the ultimate wealth of our life , that if we have krsna’s devotees , we have his beautiful form and we have his holy name . People are very miserly hold on to their money , hold on to their wealth . But that wealth chanchalam , is very flickering . Laxmi who is presiding deity of wealth , she is always moving from one place to another , no one can keep her for long . Therefore Jay lila prem dhana , the supreme wealth , is the wealth of love of god , the wealth of love of god which is so easily attained by one who honestly and sincerely learns to take shelter in the association of Krsna’s devotees. Learns to take shelter of the beautiful form of krsna in temple and learns to take shelter of Krsna’s holy name

Everything else is extra and unnecessary , if we have it we use it in his service , if we don’t have anything else but the Visnu murti and the name we don’t need anything , we are satisfied , to keep this in our mind always is real sanatana dharma . To cherish and be grateful for every single opportunity we have to approach Krsna in his name with his devotees , that’s is the perfection of our consciousness . THANK YOU VERY MUCH !
