The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

Purified or unpurified or even having passed through all situations in life, one who remembers the beautiful lotus eyed Supreme Personality of Godhead is purified from within and without. Within this verse the very essence of scriptures, the very essence of dharma, the very essence of life is encapsulated. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he revealed to us that the very essence of all scriptures that the highest occupation is to revive the dormant primal love that is within the heart of all living beings. The Bhagavatam tells that whatever our occupation whatever activities that we perform if they do not culminate in love of God which means a spontaneous attraction to hearing and chanting of the glories of the Lord than it is simply a waste of time.

The supreme occupation for all humanity is love and devotion to the Lord. Such consciousness must be unmotivated by any selfish egoistic desires and uninterrupted by any impediment that may come on our path. This is the meaning of Bhakti, unmotivated and uninterrupted devotional service. The ego is the tendency to try in to bring in our own selfish desires, our own selfish aspirations our own misconceptions and think that “I am serving Krishna, I am serving Guru.” But this is simply maya! Srimad Bhagavatam is full of examples of what a true devotee actually is. How to give pleasure to the Lord? Trying to give pleasure to ourselves through our own ideas has been the cause of our suffering and bondage since time immemorial. And there may be schools of yoga or schools of religion that preach; through this process you can fulfil your desires in a better way. But the sampradaya coming from Srimad Bhagavatam, dharmaù projjhita-kaitavo, rejects this. Srila Prabhupada explained that there are many yoga institutions there are many religious institutions that teach these things, you can have a happier material life, sprinkle a little spirituality in it and you can be happy. But Srila Prabhupada explains that this society is exclusively for giving the people the opportunity for attaining love of God. That means to overcome our selfishness and our ego, to develop an actual service attitude. In Bhakti service means unselfish, it means for the pleasure of Krishna, for the pleasure of Guru, for the pleasure of Vaishnavas and for the welfare of other people. This is the speciality of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s teachings. He Himself accepted a spiritual master and was willing to go to the highest extremes of dedication and renunciation to carry out the instruction of His spiritual master. Krishna was carrying wood in a massive rainstorm just to show us what it means to humbly serve Guru. Sri Ramachandra who all the demigods are worshipping, who all the great sages are worshipping, was also carrying wood and massaging and sitting at the feet and hearing Vishwamitra Muni. Just to teach us that initiation on the path of bhakti in general is a very serious subject if we want to attain perfection.
Rupa Goswami in the Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu has described elaborately, step by step how we progress in Krishna Consciousness. And our beloved Gurudev, Srila Prabhupada has given this in Nectar of Devotion. And Srila Prabhupada gave thousands and thousands of lectures during the day and all night he was translating and writing purports with the simple message. We have to develop service attitude devoid of selfish ego. Devoid of what I want and put first what Krishna wants. If we do this we are real we are serious otherwise we are not sincere. We should not put the costume of spirituality over our desire to exploit others for our own purposes. What does Krishna want? We have to give up our imagination and actually be sincere.
The Srimad Bhagavatam from the very beginning rejects cheating religion.
sarva-dharmän parityajya mäm ekaà çaraëaà vraja
ahaà tväà sarva-päpebhyo mokñayiñyämi mä çucaù [BG 18.66]
To surrender to Krishna is the culmination of Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam begins from that point and goes deeper and deeper into higher and more sublime realms of surrender and love. Some people want to imitate gopis, but even before we could approach the dust that has been left behind 10Kms from the Gopi’s lotus feet, first of all you have to fully completely emulate and live by the standards of Prahalad, Dhruva, Ambharish Maharaj, Sukadev Goswami, RantiDev and all these great saints. Srimad Bhagavatam first teaches us that first be like these and then you can honestly try to follow in the footsteps of the Gopis, the purest, highest standard of love. So this is the great gift that brings the purest happiness to the soul, because it gives the greatest happiness to Krishna.
And in this age of kali this can be achieved by learning the art of chanting Krishna’s holy names. But in order to chant properly we must understand very very carefully it is a science that must incorporate every aspect of our life. Of course even if we do anything we like, even if we chant we will make some little progress. But if we actually want to proceed and grow first of all we have to take our chanting as the most serious part of our lives. We shouldn’t think of it as something we get over with as a duty and go on with other more important things. It is the most important thing; it is where we connect with Krishna. It is where we embrace Krishna’s foremost of all instruction. Krishna has descended as His name, Kali-kale nama-rupe krishna-avatar. Now just because we can chant any time and He is always there in His name we should not take it cheaply. We have to be very serious. Krishna is there in His name, He has descended, He has incarnated to deliver us. We reciprocate by taking very seriously the opportunity to find His shelter in His name. According to the sincerity and emotion we chant, Krishna is going to reciprocate. We are in a crocodile of material energy of maya, we must recognize it. In the spirit of Gajendra we should cry out the holy name. We are in the fire of material existence, saàsära-dävänala-léòha-loka, Like Prahalad when he was put in fire, we must be chanting the holy names with that focus. We should take our chanting very very seriously as the ultimate gift and the highest priority of our life. It is the Yuga dharma. It’s been given us but how does maya try to block our progress? In so many ways, but one which is very critical is somehow or other she gets this idea in our mind to take the chanting cheaply. Let me just get through it so that I can go on to the next thing. Actually we should get through everything else so that we can get to our chanting. That is proper perception. So when we put down to chant we must put our greatest focus gratitude in our heart into our connecting with Krishna by crying His names. We do this in Japa and in Kirtan.
The next principle that is very important is our service attitude. If we don’t have an attitude in which we have an unselfish will to serve than our chanting is superficial. If we are actually chanting properly then a selfless service attitude will manifest; and if we are actually having a selfless service attitude then we will begin to taste the sweetness of the holy name. They are interdependent on each other. We see how Ramachandra was serving others and how Krishna was serving and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the role of the devotee, his greatest prayer was to be the servant of the servant of the servant of the Gopis of Vrindavan. To serve means with the actual desire to please the object of our service. It is not a matter of physical proximity it is a matter of sincerity. Srila Prabhupada kept a few essential people, who were doing immense service for him, with him and the others were wanted in the field to serve in separation. He considered people who came close for their own purposes without really serving, he considered that they were as pleasing to him as the mosquitoes. Who always want to be close by but simply create disturbance. So physical proximity is not what is important but our service attitude is actually what is all important. Those who actually love Srila Prabhupada feel his presence the deepest even now, in separation, through their service, Dedicated to carry out his instruction. If you think you can’t do it, everyone can do it, anyone can do it. It’s just a matter of just a little bit of sincerity. And that is where the real connection is.
And one of the greatest types of disservice is to criticize others, to find faults with others, to involve in all kinds of selfish politics. That is the greatest disservice and it blocks Krishna from manifesting in His name when you chant.
tåëäd api sunécena taror api sahiñëunä

To be humble like blade of grass, to be tolerant like a tree, willing to offer all respects to others , without expecting prestige or honor for one selves. This is the spirit of actual devotional service. This is the spirit in which we can attract the all attractive Lord to manifest in the holy name and clean our hearts and awaken love.
The Mind is the worst enemy if it is proposing anything different than what we are speaking today. So don’t trust the mind, trust Krishna’s words.
There are also ten offences against the holy names. By carefully observing and avoiding these offences then very quickly we can taste and feel Krishna Consciousness manifest within us. Every one please recite the ten offences against the holy name at this time. By chanting Krishna’s names with this attitude of Humility and service really taking shelter of the names and of the senior vaishnavas we can receive the gift Srila Prabhupada sacrificed his life to give all of us. When Krishna or any of His avatars descend to this world it is primarily for the purpose of showing compassion to the fallen souls. The highest and most pleasing thing we can do for Krishna is to assist Him.
Sri Caitnaya Mahaprabhu when he was in Varanasi, he explained himself to be a seller of fruit. The fresh ripened fruit of pure love for Krishna. He said I have so many fruits, unlimited fruits and I cannot distribute them all by myself. I am requesting all of my devotees to help me in distributing these fruits of Krishna-prema. Nityananda Prabhu, Haridas Thakur in order to assist Mahaprabhu in distributing these fruits were going door to door, shop to shop, person to person, begging and pleading, please take the holy name, please take the path of bhakti. And there were people who wanted to kill them. Jagai, Madhai or that brahmana who became a dacoit, had a whole plan to murder Nityananda Prabhu and all His devotees. But in the end, when the Lord’s compassion overwhelmed their hearts, all He asked them was to “live by those principles and teach them to others.” To the king of the dacoits, He said, “Other dacoits respect you than they respect anyone else, so you give them Krishna consciousness.” There was a Sankirtan party of ex-dacoits. Madhai was the most cruel. Evil, arrogant person. He became more humble than a blade of grass. He bowed to serve everyone and anyone without expecting anything in return and always trying to give Lord Caitanya’s message to others. Within the International society for Krishna consciousness, we are all forever indebted to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada for establishing the mission and giving us the pure teachings by which we can be a part of Sri Caitanya’s lila. He was our Founder Acarya. And all of his disciples, grand disciples, great grand disciples, for all generations, we are all meant to humbly, sincerely work together cooperatively without sectarian spirit to assist him. That is our perfection. We have to give up our egos in order to do this. That is what Bhakti is about – giving up our false ego, to be the servant of the servant of the servant. By pleasing Srila Prabhupada, we can give pleasure to Sri Sri Radha Gopinath because he has fully realized and fully implemented the very intimate purpose of the Lord’s descent into this world. Krishna came as Mahaprabhu to taste the Love of Sri Radharani and to distribute this love of Sri Radharani far and wide through the chanting of the holy names

We welcome all of you who have come from so many places. And we are extremely grateful to each and every one of you for coming forward to sincerely dedicate your lives to assist Srila Prabhupada in giving the gift of his compassion. Goloka Vrindavan is the place of the sweetest pastimes of Sri Radha Gopinath. What we read in the 10th canto about the beautiful lilas of Radha and Krishna, Krishna Balaram, what we hear from the books of the goswamis, Srila Prabhupada has come from that place to invite us to join him there. But in this material world where the atmosphere is so full of selfishness and exploitation, it takes a very serious soul to give his life for this purpose. Krishna consciousness, there can be tens and millions of people practicing. But according to Prabhupada’s standard, to take initiation is for people who are very sincere, who are really striving for perfection. And this is what we expect from all of you, to be very sincere and deeply strive for perfection. And to represent this humble spirit of servitude, exemplary sadhana and avoiding all fault finding, criticism and offenses to others. To be very very attentive and cooperative with the leaders, wherever you may be, to have create real communities of exemplary devotional service. This is what we expect from all of you. And for coming forward for this sincere purpose, I am sincerely indebted and very grateful to each of you.
Thank you very much.
