The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.
RadhanathMaharaj.net gives us a complete collection of the teaching of Radhanath Swami. Teachings consists of Transcriptions of lectures delivered by Radhanath Swami at various places. This website is to inspire the followers of Radhanath Swami to practice the philosophy of Vaishanavism.
___________________0:00:05. There are principles to regulate attachment and aversion pertaining to the senses and their objects one should not come under the control of such attachment and aversion because they are stumbling blocks in the path of self-realization. Bhagavad-Gita teaches on the practical level how we can disentangle ourselves from the sources of misery within this material world. Here in Krsna explains that: “Misery has its root cause in our trying to find happiness in the temporary phenomena of this world”. The pleasures that our senses experience when coming in contact with the objects of the senses is the goal of life of practically everyone within the material world. But Krsna explains: “that it is this pleasure of sense enjoyment that is the source of all pain. Because we become so much attached to that pleasure and it has a beginning and an end”.
The great Vaishnav poet Sri Narottam Das Thakur has prayed: ______________0:02:53 “that this rare human birth which is meant for finding the ecstasy of serving Radha and Krsna is spoiled due to my attachment to the objects of the senses”. And he compares the pleasures of sense enjoyment to poison, the most terrible poison which creates a burning within our heart. If someone were to tell you that this poison you would not only, not drink it but you would avoid it very carefully. But poison that kills the body is not so dangerous because after all the body will die either today or tomorrow anyway. But sense enjoyment kills our propensity to serve the Supreme Lord. It kills and defeats our very purpose of our existence. Therefore it is the greatest poison. And this whole world practically is manufacturing more and more flavors of poison. And are creating more new and newer ways of trying to drink this poison.
___________ 0:05:35 Prahalad Maharaj explains that: “For an intelligent person when he looks and observes this whole world of human society as well as the lower species society, we simply see one thing going on, chewing that which has already been chewed. The lower species are eating, sleeping, mating and defending and this very rare developed human existence which gives us a very deep intelligence is simply being utilized to find newer and more exciting ways of eating, sleeping, mating and defending. Because the basic forms of the animals we have for the 8 millions, 400 thousands species perhaps we have enjoyed in that way, now we come to human life with this developed intelligence it is not even pleasurable doing it like the animals so we have to find newer and more exciting creative ways of eating, sleeping, mating and defending. To somehow or other trying to find pleasure. The basic principle of pleasure in this material world is the attraction between the male and female. From that attraction comes so many other entanglements, to beauty of people’s bodies and then to children wealth, relatives, home, reputation and we are thinking that this is pleasure of mind but however much we have, we are always longing our heart is always burning for something more or something else. And the more you put the fuel of sense enjoyment on this burning fire caused by the poison of sense gratification the harder it burns. This poison of material sense enjoyment creates a fire in the heart and the more poison we put on it the harder the fire burns. Within the Vedic civilization there is a way of regulating sense gratification according a person’s natural propensities. This is called Varnashram Dharma, so in this process there is a peaceful condition in the society where spiritual elevation is very natural. But when society becomes uncontrolled it is simply burning and burning. The Western world is utterly on fire, a man and a woman they together on the basis of the fire of Kama and the arrows of Madana, Cupid and they just give their minds, hearts, lives to each other. And then they divorce, finished. And along with divorce are so many pains, implications, legal complications and fighting over that who sees the children and their lives are totally miserable. Eighty percent of all such burning love end in such burning pain and we have our television which is just putting more and more poison in our hearts to make the fire burn harder and there is this cinemas you pay so much money just to drink poison and there is musical entertainment feeding poison through our ears making the heart hard burning and we are so uncivilized that we think that burning is pleasure. So many modern creative inventions that biggest and best scientific brains are just spending their lives inventing various ways to create newer forms of enjoyment and the more you have to enjoy the more other people want to take it away and therefore there is always a fear, suspicion, then there is crime because someone else wants what you have that creates burglary, robberies, rapes and killings. Then on a collective level wars and people so frustrated by the whole phenomena yet they cannot give up drinking poison of sense enjoyment that they start taking intoxications and through this process of intoxication and going here and there looking for sense gratification, all kinds of diseases like AIDS, Cancer and heart diseases and everything is coming out. Burning of the desire for sense gratification makes the heart so hard that people do not mind even killing other living entities, to drink their blood and to eat their flesh and even after you are successful you have big families, you have so much money in the western world they are not satisfied, they have some more excitement, some other type of the burning just has to be quenched, so they go to the gambling houses and gamble just to intoxicate their mind with that pleasure and this is called advancement of civilization. The people of India, you have been given this wonderful culture of self control, spirituality, philosophy are leaving all these things behind crying out for more and more of the poison of Western civilization. But we should know however much our heart burns we can never ever be satisfied through the process of material enjoyment. __________0:16:12. From the spiritual world has descended the Holy names of Krsna, the Supreme Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has extracted the highest and most important teachings of Vedas. He has told has you are looking for nectar because the soul by nature is seeking nectar of ecstasy. You will not find it in material life; you will find it in Krsna. Krsna is the all attractive, eternal source of pleasure for soul. Krsna is Madan Mohan he who attracts even the heart of the God of Love with this world. By coming in connection with Krsna our hearts can be truly satisfied eternally, Krsna has descended in his name, we can at once be cleansed of all this poison within our hearts by chanting Krsna’s name. The mercy that comes through Krsna’s name is like a down pour of rain which can extinguish this burning fire within our hearts. By chanting Krsna’s name we realize that we are eternal servants of Krsna and through that service we can realize what is real love? In that realization we can perceive how everything within this material universe is intimately and integrally related to Krsna. A materialistic person and an advanced devotee of the Lord have a completely different perception of the same phenomena of this world. One who wants to enjoy the resources of material energy everything we see makes us forget Krsna. So one who has a desire to serve, everything we see, we see Krsna in that. How is that? Because essentially everything is the energy of Krsna. Depending on how that on one particular receptacle energy comes through, it will manifest in a different way. Electricity is energy, it is coming from a common power house, when it comes into a heating mechanism the electricity creates heat, when it comes into air conditioning facility it creates cool. Materialistic people are like their hearts are like heaters, anything their senses or mind comes in contact with because of this desire to enjoy; it just makes their heart burn harder and harder with desire. But the devotee of a Lord, whatever we see, hear, taste, smell, touch, think it but creates cooling effect within our heart. It is natural, when the sun comes into the room; we naturally associate the sunshine with the sun. The sunshine is the energy of the sun but because we know the source of energy when we see the sunshine we think Ah! The sun has come. A devotee whatever he/ she experiences within this world, we immediately can see this is Krsna, this is Krsna’s energy and Krsna is the source and Krsna is the ultimate goal. A materialistic person, when he sees something or someone very beautiful wants to enjoy for himself or herself either physically or mentally and fire burns. But a devotee whatever beautiful thing he/ she sees or whatever beautiful person thinks, “Oh! This is for Krsna’s enjoyment. Let me use this for Krsna’s enjoyment” and that consciousness creates eternal spiritual ecstasy within our hearts. In fact that is the natural condition of the pure soul and to awaken this pure state of consciousness the process of chanting the Holy names is given by the Lord. Your happiness will come naturally, the pleasure we are all seeking will come by the Lord’s mercy when we sincerely chant the Holy names:
Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
The Lord has sent his own divine servants to demonstrate the wonderful state of consciousness which is available for all of us. Today is the disappearance of Srila Jiva Goswami, who is acclaimed to be the greatest philosopher that has ever lived. His philosophy was most magnificently demonstrated by his life. When he was a tiny child, his father his name was Vallabha and his two uncles whose names at the time was Sakar Malik and Gabirkhas they were very well feel, very influential ministers of the King of Bengal. They were multi- multi millionaires by today’s standards. But they had no satisfaction in any of their riches; they understood that the only purpose and real pleasure in life is serving God. So they went to meet with Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu secretly in Ramakeri. They understood that Lord Chaitanya is the avatar of Lord Krsna for this age of Kali-yuga, when the three brothers came before the Lord although they had such high position in the society but presented themselves in the most humble possible way by falling at the floor and worshipping the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya. They surrendered to him with prayers of great humility. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu embraced them with great affection, gave them names Rupa Goswami, Sanatan Goswami and Anupam, when little Jiva was just the tiny boy saw the beauty of the Lord and the wonderful ecstasy of Bhakti exchanged between his father, his uncles and Lord his heart became completely attached to devotional service. Soon after this his father Anupam in meditation on the Supreme Lord left this material body and went back to the spiritual world. This small child Jiva, his heart was simply longing for devotional service to the Lord. Although he had so much wealth and so many pleasures around him, he totally rejected everything. He cared nothing for playing like children. He cared for nothing for all fancy dress, beautiful ornaments, tasty foods, luxurious surroundings, with his own hands he made deities of Krsna – Balaram and day and night he simply served those deities with love, he would make garlands for deities, he would make beautiful clothes and dress them, he would put ornaments on them and decorate the body with sandalwood pulp. He would get nicest possible foods and offer them to the Lord, he would sing and dance for the Lord, sometimes he would just weep incessant tears for Krsna-Balaram and no matter how much anyone tried to engage him in the pleasures an ordinary child wants to enjoy, he was so busy constantly serving the Lord in ecstatic love that he had no concern for that. When one becomes attached to Krsna one becomes detached from material world. And when people would see him weeping and crying in ecstatic love they were astounded, they had never seen such attachment and detachment simultaneously.
One time he had a wonderful dream, he saw hundreds and thousands of people and they all surrounding the beautiful forms of Lord Chaitanya and Lord Nityananda and along with them were Advaita, Gadadhar and Srivas and by the influence of Lord Chaitanya with great love and tears in their eyes everyone had their arms raised they were chanting Krsna’s Holy names:
Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
And then the dreamed stopped and Jiva woke up and then he fell asleep again and the dream continued and his worship able deities Krsna-Balaram appeared before in their original divine forms, Krsna a dark complexion like Tamul tree and Balaramji had a beautiful white complexion like a fresh a newly formed spring cloud and they were decorated with beautiful flowers, garlands and ornaments. Each of their limbs were supremely exquisite and charming to the heart. They mercifully glanced with divine love at little Jiva and right before Jiva Goswami’s eyes, Lord Krsna transformed himself into the golden form of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Balaramji transformed his form into that of a beautiful personality of Nityananda Prabhu and they both placed their lotus feet on Jiva Goswami’s head and weeping in ecstatic love he was holding unto their feet. And then the dream ended. He understood, he could no longer stay home, he had to go to Vrundavan to join his uncles Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami, first he decided to go to Navadweep, at Navadweep he met with Lord Nityananda Prabhu, who he saw as his own worship able Balaram, he took him on a tour of all the nine islands of Navadweep and personally told him the stories and introduced him to the original associates of Lord Chaitanya who were still surviving after disappearance of the Lord. And Lord Nityananda after this Navadweep Dham parikrama, he told Jiva Goswami that: “Lord Chaitanya has personally given Vrundavan to be the home of your family, so you should join your uncles there”, on his way he stopped in Varanasi, he studied under the greatest scholar of the day Madhusudan Vachaspati and very quickly he became the greatest authority of all the systems of philosophy especially Nyaya and Vedanta. And his teacher was exclaiming his glories throughout all of Varanasi. He had the opportunity of great fame and fortune of being the greatest teacher but he was only concerned with being servant of servant of the Vaishnavas, therefore he left Varanasi to go to Vrundavan. When he arrived in Vrundavan the greatest saints of the world were waiting for him to come. There was Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami and Gopalbhatta Goswami, Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami, Raghunath Das Goswami, Lokanatha Goswami, Yugarba Goswami, Kashiswar Pandit and so many other very exalted great personalities. They all welcome Jiva Goswami who surrendered at the lotus feet of Sanatan and prayed to Sanatan Goswami to accept him as his disciple. Sanatan Goswami offered Jiva at the lotus feet of Rupa Goswami, this reminds us when he was just little child and he had this dream I explained what he saw Lord Chaitanya and Lord Nityananda, first he surrendered at the feet of Lord Chaitanya and Lord Chaitanya told him that: “You should seek shelter of Nityananda Prabhu’s Lotus feet”, so he went to Lord Nityananda and surrendered to him and Lord Nityananda told him that: “Through serving me I am offering you to the Lord Chaitanya”. So Sanatan Goswami offered him to the lotus feet of Rupa Goswami and Rupa Goswami wanted to show the world the greatness of this devotee. He had already proven himself to be the greatest scholar in all the world but Rupa Goswami engaged him in very simple services like cleaning vessels, washing the floor in the temple, picking flowers and garlands, massaging the lotus feet of his Guru and the devotees, cooking, sometimes by getting palm leaves and preparing them into the proper type of paper in which the Goswamis would write their books. He was completely satisfied just being a menial humble servant of his Guru and Vaishnavas. And it was then that Rupa Goswami gave him initiation into the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampraday, this is the test of a real disciple. We should not a spiritual master thinking we will get some prestige or some material benefit from it. We should approach a genuine spiritual master with a desire to hear submissively and serve, and the blessing which we receive from such service - we develop a pure heart and love for Krsna, Which is the only wealth that can actually satisfy the soul. There are many wonderful, beautiful stories of Sri Jiva Goswami while he lived in Vrundavan, after Rup and Sanatan Goswami left this world they installed him to be the Commander in chief, the leader of whole Gaudiya Sampraday and he trained systematically some of the greatest preachers who ever live like Srinivas Acharya, Narothamdas Thakur and Shyamananda Gosai and through his books he wrote over four hundred thousands Sanskrit verses, he elucidated in the most authoritative words the ultimate essence of all knowledge with his devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna. He established Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s teachings in such way that from every point of view of knowledge and science one who hears his teachings would be convinced of The Supreme Truth of the Vedas and its conclusion through Bhakti. Srila Jiva Goswami worshipped the beautiful deity of Radha Damodar and he worshipped that deity which was given to him by Rupa Goswami as his life and soul. Srila Jiva Goswami through his life and teachings has given us the perfect illustration of what we should aspire for in our life. The six Goswamis they gave (some text missing)0:47:15 ---- they gave up the finest foods and to go on Madhukari and just take whatever a beggar receives. They renounced the finest clothes to wear nothing but a discarded old, tattered, linen cloth. But they were always absorbed in the highest ecstasies of spiritual satisfaction; they were always so mercifully giving their lives to help others to experience the ecstasy of Krsna Consciousness. They were simply happy experiencing the higher taste and hearing about Krsna and chanting his Holy names:
Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
It is not possible for all us to live as such Goswamis in this life but Jiva Goswami and his descendants like His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad have taught us how we can live a pure spiritual life in the same status right now. Narottamdas Thakur has prayed “whether you are a Gruhasta living at home living with wife or husband or children or you are living in forest or an ashram that is not what is important, what is important is our spirit and purpose of our life. We are not the enjoyer, we are the servant”. When we associate with the devotees of the Lord, hear the glories of the Lord, live a pure and moral life, chant the Holy names of the Lord, we naturally develop the great desire to utilize everything we have for the betterment of humanity and the service of God. In this way we can find ultimate peace and happiness in this very life. We can share that happiness with all those we love. At the inevitable end of this material body our soul returns to its original destination - the spiritual world. Where we are eternally in the presence of the Lord and his devotees and we are eternally immersed in the glorification of Krsna and his names. There are principles to regulate attachment and aversions pertaining to the senses and their objects one should not come under the control of such attachment and aversion because they are stumbling blocks in the path of self-realization, this verse of Bhagavad-Gita can be fulfilled by simply learning how to utilize our present mind and senses always in the service of Krsna.
Thank you very much
Hare Krsna.
