The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

TRANSLATION
One who narrates this description of the Matsya incarnation and King Satyavrata will certainly have all his ambitions fulfilled, and he will undoubtedly return home, back to Godhead.
Narration explains the coming of the first and the greatest incarnations of the supreme lord as a lila avatar ( forming pastimes ). Srila Jayadev Goswami in his GitaGovinda , introduction explains the ‘das-avatar’ ten most primary lila avathar’s. In lila avathar the supreme personality of Godhead comes into this material world to perform wonderful wonderful pastimes. Unexcelled by anyone but himself. So when the supreme personality of Godhead comes to this world we must understand he is abhigya-swarat, he knows everything, he is fully independent to any way he want. He has no limitation There is no restriction for what is possible and what is impossible for the supreme personality of godhead.
In regard to this one recently in Malaysia on the ocean side where one sincere soul inquired that we hared Krishna is blue, how is it that can anybody could be blue. Remember that question? He asked not to challenge but to understand because it is beyond his comprehension that how could anybody be blue. He has seen people, In American there are red Indians, in chinese they are said to be yellow, in Africa they are black, in Scandinavia they are white, in India you are various varieties of ten colors. Therefore no one of you have seen anyone who is blue. It means that if you can’t be blue then nobody can be blue. Is that our conclusion? when we heard that Krishna is a blue cowherd boy, can anyone could be a blue cowherd boy? So I said, just look up into the sky, up to the stars , can anyone of us create such a beautiful stars, all species of life , the beautiful moon and the ocean and all the aquatics of the ocean. All the vegetation on the earth, everything working perfectly in such a order, can any of us do like that? Someone who can create the entire universe effortlessly, then certainly it is not so difficult for him to appear as blue form. What Krishna lifted the govardhan hill just with little finger of his left hand which seems impossible for atheist. One who has faith in the inconceivable potencies of the lord there is nothing we can have, that makes us doubt that god can do it. Krishna said in geetha that all the wonderful things you see is just a spark of my glory. Someone who in running games breaks some record, we think oh anyone can possibly do that we not surprised when a human being can do something that little beyond our comprehension. what to speak of God who has created everything.
There is a story about a magician in India. You have heard of PC Sakara? Once he invited all the big big people all high seats of government of British reign. Invited them to Mathura for performance. Be there at 4 o clock sharp and I would perform a wonderful trick that you have never seen before. All those big big people Mayor’s, government people from royal families. They came, of course British people are very proud of being very prompt, one thing Indians never adopted from British drinking tea, smoking beedi’s these things they quickly assimilated, but being prompt they never able to follow in the footsteps. So 4 o clock came, he did not come, 4:3- came still did not come, quarter to 5, they were furious. And finally effortlessly casually as nothing happened he just climbed up to the stage at 5 o clock. By that time there was an uproar of people shouting and yelling and threatening him of his life. He said what is the trouble? What is the trouble, you are an hour late, we have important government work to do and you wasted one hour of our time. He looked at his watch, I am not one hour late it is exactly 4 o clock. Everyone in the audience looked at their watches and the watches said 4 o clock.
This is a true story. An ordinary materialistic magician can do lik that.
And in SB, there is a something narrated by Srila Visvanath Chakravarthi Thakur who gave little explanation what men can do. This is the story where how Krishna wrapped up the whole pastime of the annihilation of yadu dynasty and actually nobody even got killed, it was all just an illusion. Then he explained that there were a family of magicians they came to a king and queen in the palace. Oh if you show us nice performance we’ll reward you well. So they performed wonderful and wonderful magic shows and the queen was so happy that she took out her only jewel necklace and gave it to the, “mother”, “wife of the family”. As she was holding and looking at it and thinking oh what a precious and nice gift one of the children came and asked could I see it , she said no, it is very valuable, but he said please, please, she said alright look at it. There were tow children in the family and the other joined and they both started playing with it. Then one took it and the other took it, the other took, the other took it and the y started getting in a fight and arguing who owned it, so one of children drew a sword the other child drew a sword and they both cut each other head simultaneously and the heads fell to the floor and there was blood flowing everywhere and the mother was thinking, ‘Oh God it is all because of me and I gave it to them and they killed each other. She was so attached to the children and she picked up the sword and cut off her own head and her head fell to the ground and more blood was flowing all over the court. Then the husband was thinking what is the use of my life. My wife, my children they all are dead. So he picked the sword and cut off his own head. And there was blood everywhere. The king, queen all of them thinking how inauspicious this, this is very very bad. They were so disturbed in their minds. They called the servants to wipe up all the blood put the bodies in some boxes then in a river and that night nobody could sleep, thinking how inauspicious it was. To them the next day a letter came and the letter said, u may remember the family of magician u gave us the nice reward for our first act, but you never gave anything for our second act where we cut our heads and died. To give reward you can come to our house, this is our address. The king and the queen thought this maybe true so they went to the house and saw there was the family holding the necklace who very nicely welcomed and received their guests.
So when ordinary human beings can perform the magical tricks, what is that God cannot do. Who is the power of powerful, who is the strength of strong and intelligence of intelligent, and who is ability in man. Achintya shakti. So therefore when Krishna comes to this world, he is not going to come just like rest of all us, otherwise what is the point of his coming, he comes to prove to the world how he is supreme. He comes to prove the world that our real happiness is in loving and serving him. Attracting our consciousness back to his diving nature, that is to show to a person who does not have faith in the inconceivable potencies of god have think that this is simply some sort of symbolic after all a god can appear as a fish. I cannot appear as a fish, you cannot appear as a fish. How it is possible that God can appear as fish. Not only as fish, but the fish was thousands and millions of miles big. But for a devotee, he simply smiles from the core of his heart, oh God has appeared as a fish, millions of miles big. What is that my god cannot do. How wonderful is Krishna. This faith must be in the heart of the devotee. And this is not blind faith this is reasonable faith, after all it we consider how conditioned our minds are, how attached we are to the material world, how difficult to become pure devotees in this life to purify our hearts is the great challenge to Krishna then to appearing as a fish. If we can’t believe that Krishna can come as a big fish. then we might as well think in opposite condition, who gonna save us, my god it is a real challenge. But when we turn to Krishna, one who surrender to Krishna one with all humility and devotion chants his names, he is prepared and ready to welcome to gratest of all miracle to transform your life into that of a pure devotee.
Just like Srila Prabhupada, there is one test, you have heard this story so many times, you have any miracles, show us a miracle, because after all in India there are many miracle mans. People who can meditate can create gold, ashes, and various paraphernalia from the air, people who can read each others their minds, people who can walk on water, fly in the sky and these people exists even today. We’ve personally seen these things, it is not a very important thing. For them this is what a guru is, someone who can perform extra ordinary magical feats. They think that guru is another set of magician sort of an entertainer, not that he is a devotee, a servant of God. This is a misconception. So they ask Prabhupada, can u show us a miracle, Prabhupada looked around his disciples “these boys and girls not so more than a few years ago were addicted to every kind of sinful activities. They were eating meat from the time they were conceived by their mother, there was sex, intoxication, gambling and not only that they were completely materialistic and Godless, and now they have sacrificed their life and soul to the loving service to Krishna. Their hearts have changed. This is the greatest miracle. This is a miracle which is worth living to see this is a miracle worth dedicate our lives to experience. And did Prabhupada performed this miracle? Krishna performed this miracle, through the divine grace of his surrendered devotee. And the fact is anyone of us when depend on the hands of the God and give up our separate interest, we can be the vehicles, the vessels of the God’s miracles in this world. And the ultimate miracle is to change the heart of the person to love Krishna, this is the great miracle. So Krishna appears in this wonderful fish incarnation, in one sense he is coming to give us faith to show faithless and hopeless that I can do anything and everything. You may think that you are in a hopeless condition of life, but have hope that I can do, I can do anything, just let me do it for you, when Krishna appears in this world, he begs us, let me do it for you. Let me perform a miracle for you. Let me change your life, let me fill joy and love. Let me help you transcend birth and death and attain eternal, unmotivated, uninterrupted service to me. He comes begging
So to share these stories and understand them is very very important. And we must understand this from those devotees who has faith, as soon as we see their faith our faith will naturally awake in our hearts. Madhavendra Puri said that let me materialistic talk, laugh at me, why do I fear , I have complete faith in Krishna. I have complete hope that Krishna can do anything, anytime therefore I am his devotee. SrilaPrabhupda gives us the example of a frog in a well. All that he knows is that well, he was born in that well, lived his whole life, and he cannot conceive anything beyond that well. But there another frog jumped in that well. And this frog said, ah where are you coming from, I’m coming from Pacific Ocean. Pacific Ocean, what is the Pacific Ocean? It is very big water, so much water that you won’t believe it. How much water? Is it almost as big as this well ? The other frog said, you don’t understand it. it is very big. So it is twice as big as this well? Oh no, very very big. 3 times ? The frog can only try to imagine only on the basis of its well. Therefore he could never ever conceive the Pacific ocean. So similarly our conception of reality is that a very tiny tiny insignificant little realm of our condition sense perception. But Krishna is beyond our sense perception. Srila Bhaktipad is preaching very very strongly these days that you can never understand Krishna. As a part and parcel according to your capacity like a drop of a ocean. But no one can understand the entirety ocean. No one can understand the entirety of Krishna. You can never know Krishna, you can love Krishna. You know only how much power you have to know, but it is only a drop in a ocean. Even in the liberated condition. No one knows Krishna. He is all great. He is so great that even Krishna does not know Krishna. That is why Caitanya, as Mahaprabhu appeared. What is so great about himself. With all of his supreme great imagination, he could not understand how great he really was. What is that attracts Radha rani attracts so much. If krishna cannot understand himself, do you think you can ? Therefore he appeared as Lord caitnaya trying understand himself. Trying to taste he sweetness of his name, sweet is trying to taste himself. And the greatness is Lord Caitanya could never taste his name to fullest. The last 12 years of his life in separation he was simply in longing, in longing, in longing and longing. So how we know Krishna’s sweetness? In Shikastakam prayers Lord Caitanya revealed that the supreme lord is beyond our mind. That your are inconceivable, your absence a moment is like a 12 years or more, tears are flowing from eyes like torrents of rain. My hair is standing on its end. So therefore we must know the infinite unlimited glory of god in principle, and very very open in accepting all the authoritative narrations of the lord’s divine pastimes. And when we hear them with this proper approach, proper consciousness, and as we hear them more and more love grows and we try to figure out how did he do it. In Krishna Consciousness is not attained by our brain, Krishna Consciousness can only be experienced in heart. We can never figure out Krishna But the more we hear about him with faith, the more we love him.
Is there any questions ?
Question : <not clear> summary: we read in the scriptures that Krishna can do everything. And we have 100% conviction, but when the difficulty comes, our faith is shaken. So how to see this ?
Answer : when the difficulties come it is a chance to realize we have gathered theoretical fath, but this theoretical faith is not enough to cross this beyond the world of death.
U cannot live without faith. Our faith has to be on the basis of realization. And realization takes place, when the test comes, until then they remain theoretical . If you are sincere, when the test comes just like gold. Gold is purfied by fire. Faith is purified by fire. If you are sincere your faith will strengthen and purified in the face of the test. The process would be very difficult but the outcome would be self realization. If you are not sincere, then you will give up and accept the many alternatives that maya is presenting before you. Therfore we must listen to the great souls. We must read Bhagavatham, all the Quaran, all the great scriptures of the world, where it gives about the great souls who have lived and faced this test. And how their faith God had passed. Druva maharaj was fully insulted. Do you know what was the test for him? What test Prahalad Maharaj has to go through, when his father totally rejected him and tried to kill him. Was this a test or not?
Imagine if your father did what druva maharaj’s father did. It is a very horrible and bitter test. Why are these souls celebrated, because when we hear from them then we can follow them in our own lives. Look at the arjuna and pandava’s. Look at even Maharaj Satyavrth he was been tested. He was the persons who can be rewarded. He could have said forget the fish. But he kept performing his duties in the most difficult situations. – Srila BhaktiSiddhanta saraswathi, Bakti Vinod Takur, Gaur kishore das babaji, every acarya lived a life of severe test. Why? they didn’t have to, but by hearing how they maintained their loving devotion to the lord in the most difficult situation, we can strengthen our own realization, and when the test comes follow in their foot steps. “Mahjanena gatha sandha. If we are sincere we must follow in the foot steps of great souls. Therefore we must associate with great souls, hear from them these wonderful narrations and them and digesting them and when the test comes, we are prepared. Realization will overcome the test and Krishna is so kind to give the change to realize all this information finally.
Q < not clear>
A. As we become pure, the realizations are more and more prominent.. It is not cheap. We have to purify our hearts. And how to purify our hearts? By humbly following in the foot steps of the great souls. By chanting Gods holy names. By acting as a servant of the servant of the servant of the lord.
