The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

TRANSLATION
The demigod and great saintly persons showered flowers in a joyous mood, and clouds gathered in the sky and mildly thundered making sounds like those of the ocean’s waves. Then the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu who is situated in the core of everyone’s heart, appeared from the heart of Devaki in the dense darkness of night, like the full moon rising on the eastern horizon, because Devaki was same the category as Sri Krsna
SRI KRSNA JANMASTAMI
I am very grateful to have this opportunity to be with all of you on a holy day of Janmastami in Srila Prabhupada’s national head quarters in America, In Dwarka in presence of Sri, Sri Rukmani Dwarkadvish and their very beloved devotees. In 1972 I had the fortune of being in New Vrndavana when Srila Prabhupada was personally present for Janmastami. It was an incredible day, in many ways very common, in other ways extra-ordinary. the common thing, was that, they were opening a brand new temple for Sri ,Sri Vrndavana Candra and Srila Prabhupada was going to come in the evening to give a class, to be there for midnight aarti and nothing was ready. They hadn’t painted the wall, there were still lot of construction to be done, and that was the common thing those days.
When Prabhupada would walk through one door ladder and paint brushes and everything would be running out the other door simultaneously, and at time exactly then what happen frantic dozens and dozens of people working and working and working, somehow had to get about a weeks of work to done in few hours and it happened and everything was finish .
Someone was praying Prabhupada would not touch the wall paint will touch on his cloth but it was very beautiful Srila Prabhupada was so happy to see the beautiful darsan of Radha Vrndavana candra devotees from all over America, in fact from all over the world, were gathered crushed in that small temple just to be with Srila Prabhupada and that holy occasion.
After the midnight aarti I remember Srila Prabhupada did something that was very instructive in many ways. He asked his very leading senior most disciples to read from Krsna book. They were reading after fasting all day from both food and water everybody was, and it was a big feast outside the temple waiting for us, mid-night aarti was done.
Srila Prabhupada said to read from Krsna book and they were reading, never the Krsna book ever seen to be such voluminous literary work, first chapter, Prabhupada said next chapter, we finished the next chapter, Prabhupada said, next chapter then prayer of the demigods. I remember, prayers of the demigod are a very long chapter and we were so tired and so hungry. I could just practically hear devotees thinking in their minds, praying to the demigods just stop praying. in demigod worship just to demigod to stop praying. But what was so beautiful that everyone was struggling, fall a sleep and falling down and sannyasi were really struggling and falling asleep and falling and reading and trying to keep each other up. And Prabhupada sat on his vyasasna with his back erupt in total rapt attention hour after hour in ecstasy in hearing about Krsna. That was one lesson, our great soul such an attachment to hearing about Krsna that was quite humbling for rest of us.
Another important lesson I think it was back 38 years later I think Srila Prabhupada told story about Krsna, why did he have hours of class for everyone, how the leadership of our movement practically western world was there, hundreds and hundreds of devotees., they all came to see Prabhupada they all came to hear Prabhupada on Janmastami and he had this reading from Krsna book. It was a very important instruction from Srila Prabhupada that he was giving us that he is non- different from his books. When I think back I believe he wanted to teach us because he knew he wouldn’t physically be with us very long. In-fact Sri Caitanya Caritamrita Sirla Prabhupada writes in response to in a purport regarding Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami where he is giving us synopses in one of the section in Caitanya Caritamrita because he said he doesn’t know he is going to live long enough to complete it
Srila Prabhupada explains by following the footsteps of Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami embarked on the mission of the translating and writing purport to all the eighteen thousands verses of Srimad-Bhagavatam,. He came to America only the first canto had he had several heart attack, stroke, sea sickness. Prabhupada said I am very old, he explain what type of physical element he had, he said I do not know I will complete this task of Srimad-Bhagavatam. He said so therefore I made a summery study of tenth canto in the form of Krsna Supreme Personality of Godhead. So they find it before devotee will have this to understand this essence of the Srimad-Bhagavatam and Krsna’s beautiful pastimes.
So on that night on Janmastami Srila Prabhupada wanted to emphasis, that he is always personally with us, to instruct us, to inspire us to bless us, in his books there is no difference between Srila Prabhupada 18.18 in that sense in his books. That night he was physically his vapo was there but he had us reading Krsna book as vani yes Srila Prabhupada blessed us he is always with in his books
I like to speak a few things from Srila Prabhupada’s Krsna’s book and Srimad-Bhagavatam on this holy day of Janmastami. Suhas Prabhu requested that we speak on the advent on Krsna this evening, what is going to be like this evening, we will try, usually these festivals are not the most attentive and quite venues we will try
So today share some story Srila Prabhupada tells just after Krsna is back advent in this world Krsna appeared on this night at mid-night and on the same night Vasudeva brought little baby Gopal to mahavan a forest of Vrndavana where Krsna appear as son of Yasoda and Nada. And that morning all the Vrajvasi leant about Krsna appearance, there was a great festival, Nandoutsav, very interesting, how Krsna arranges His leela shows different rasa simultaneously.
Nand and Yasoda had not any children for years and all the Vrajvasi were praying and begging they could have child and finally a child was born and it was Gopal, who totally attracted everyone’s hearts, mesmerize people’s mind everyone in Vrndavana surrendered their body, mind words, life and souls to Krsna the new born the child to Nanda and Yasoda. what a festival there was dancing music Brahmin chanting beautiful mantra fire yajna people were throwing butter and curd on each other this is the way they celebrated, Expression of their heart ecstasy beautiful colorful festival, like no other festival ever been celebrating the joy of having Krsna.
Meanwhile Vasudeva and Devaki were in the prison of Kamsa, after so many endeavors, they had six children they were brutally murdered in front of their eyes then another child was miscarriage. They didn’t understand what was happening. Then finally the child was born who completely captivated all of their love. And the child told them bring me across the Yamuna and leave Me with Nanda and Yasoda they only saw Him for few minutes then He was gone, that’s the way they celebrated Janmastami.
So after the Nandoutsav Nanda Maharaja had to go to Mathura to pay his taxes to Kamsa, while he was there he met with Vasudeva after exchanges of very, very deep love, because they were relative and they were best of friends Nanda and Vasudeva, the love between these two Vaisnavas, was inconceivable. Vasudeva was so worried about Krsna and Balarama, because he knew the prowess of Kamsa and how he was hunting for these children. So Vasudeva told Nanda Maharaja better you go back to Vrndavana mahavan very soon, please protect Krsna from danger and Balarama. So Nanda Maharaja went back he was wondering why Vasudeva sent him back so early. Anyways, meanwhile while Nanda was away Kamsa sent Putna because yogamaya told Kamsa that the eight child of Devaki is already somewhere else. So Putna was a mystic Srila Prabhupada explain she was witch of the category of the kechri, kechri which is fly in the sky and there is special quality is they live by eating the flesh and drinking the blood babies.
Srila Prabhupada said in a northwest, India there are still some kechri who take a branch of the tree and fly in the sky, any way Putna has such power she came to Vrndavana with the special focused meditation of killing Krsna. On Kamsa order already travelled and murdered, drunk blood and ate the flesh of countless babies. She was a serial killer by modern terminology. But she entered Vrndavana by her yogic siddhis. She changed her form. She was a gigantic demon but she changed her form to be a beautiful woman, lavishly dressed. When she came to Nanda Maharaja’s home everyone thought she must be a goddess of fortune, and come to bless a little baby Krsna, they honored her, and they respected her. They were feeling that they were so fortunate, that such an exalted personality has come to our little cowherd village.
Sukhdeva Goswami said she was like razor sharp sword covered by beautifully decorated by case they only saw the case. She walked right into the house. Right up to the little baby Krsna lying in the little bed and picked Him up, incredible Krsna was more dear to them their life the Vrajvasi and yet they let this strange woman come right in and pick up their baby . It was because she disguised herself so well. They were really thinking she was the goddess of fortune, who came to bless Krsna. As she looked at Krsna she began to think this child is oh so powerful. This child posses such strength, He may be Supreme Lord. And she was very, very attracted. But by her conditioning and her ego, she still thought that she would kill Him and eat Him. And meanwhile Krsna looked up at Putna closed His eyes. Srila Prabhupada explains there are different versions why Krsna closed his eyes.
One reason as she was coming in the roll to be His mother and He was going to have to kill her somebody who is coming as a mother. And this is first demon He was going to kill in this incarnation and it’s a lady. And according to the Vedic conjunction you are never supposed to kill a lady. She picked up little Krsna and she put her breast into His mouth previously she covered her breast with such deadly poison
